Helen V. Kriger, 84, of Newtown, died December 28. She was the wife of the late David E. Kriger. They were married for 51 years. Mrs Kriger was born February 26, 1923, in Huntington, N.Y., to Gustav and Lucy Thorne.
She worked in the business field, then married and traveled extensively as the wife of a military officer. Following World War II, they settled in Wilton, Maine, where they farmed and worked locally. After the Korean War, the Krigers ran a guest lodge in central Vermont. Mrs Kriger and her husband moved back to Long Island before moving to Newtown in 1969.
Mrs Kriger was a beloved leader of a Girl Scout troop and later of the youth group at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Newtown where she was a congregant. An honorary member of the Horticulture Club of Newtown, she was her happiest growing and arranging flowers or enjoying the myriad of birds and animals that thrived in her beautiful yard and gardens. She worked for Mannix Greenhouse for a time, and sold everlasting flowers to local businesses for many years. She was a regular for breakfast at My Place Restaurant.
Mrs Kriger is survived by two daughters, Terry Way and her husband, David, of Elkton, Md., and Donna Gollenberg and her husband, Glenn, of Southington; three grandchildren, Brian Gollenberg and his wife, Audra, Lisa Gollenberg, and Sean Way.
A memorial service was held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Newtown, on January 3.
