Roundtable To Take ‘A Closer Look At Our Schools’

NEW MILFORD — A roundtable discussion on education in our community that takes “A Closer Look at Our School,” will be held on Sunday, January 21, at 7 pm at the Temple Sholom. The Rena Cohen Berner Memorial Fund will sponsor the roundtable.

Questions to be addressed include: Is there a caste system in our middle and high schools and should that concern us? What are we doing to address the needs of disaffected and at-risk youngsters? How have the problems faced by educators changed in recent decades? How is technology changing the way our schools carry out their mission? What is the state of Connecticut doing to encourage teacher accountability?

The panelists will be Lorna Barnett, director of behavioral and health services at New Milford Hospital; Ed Epstein, principal of Kent Center School; Mike Fuhrman, New Milford High School student; Tom Mulvihill, assistant superintendent of New Milford Public Schools; and Dr Leah Stambler, professor of education at Western Connecticut State University. Louis Simon, retired principal and adjunct professor at Western Connecticut State University, will moderate the program and direct the question-and-answer session that will follow the presentations.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Temple Sholom is on Route 7, at 122 Kent Road, New Milford. Temple Sholom’s Rena Cohen Berner Memorial Fund for Jewish Culture and Vital Issues seeks to promote better understanding in the community through the exchange of cultural and historic values.
