It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joan White Tynan on January 1, 2025 at the age of 92.

Born on March 20, 1932 in Bridgeport, Joan was the youngest child of Ada and John White. She grew up in Bridgeport in a lovely area near the sound named Seaside Village and attended Bassick High School, where she pursued a career as an administrative assistant. Subsequently, she worked in that role for General Electric for a number of years until she moved on to her permanent role and mother, housekeeper and home manager with help from her mother, Ada, who the children named “Nana”.

Joan married Bob Tynan on October 20, 1965, and together they built a loving home in Newtown. They shared 41 beautiful years of marriage and created a legacy of love, respect, and devotion.

Throughout her life, Joan was known for being passionate about her community; Newtown Congregational Church, where she was a member of the choir for a number of years, keeping her children involved in activities; and spending summers at Candlewood Lake. She loved the different holidays, with Halloween being her absolute favorite. Long after her children had left, she still dressed up for Halloween, decorated the house and had the neighborhood children enjoy the funny, spooky decorations and treats she had prepared.

She is survived by her children, Bob Tynan of Atlanta, Ga., and Cecily Tynan Watson of Glen Mills, Penn.; and her beloved grandchildren Luke Watson, Emma Watson, Vivienne Tynan, and Gavin Tynan.

Joan will be remembered for her love of Newtown, her neighbors, friends and grandchildren, and could often be found cheering the grandchildren on from the soccer sidelines or Facetiming them when miles apart. We will also miss her ability to strike up a conversation with anyone she met and cherish the lasting legacy she leaves behind in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 4 pm Wednesday, January 8, at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Newtown Congregation Church, 14 West Street, Newtown CT 06470 (newtownctchurch.org).

The family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice and Glen Mills Senior Living for their kindness and care during this time.

Joan will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
