Over The Top Wrestlers Earn Medals
Newtownâs Over The Top Wrestling Club had 13 boys medal in the first statewide tournament of the season on December 28 at Bristol High School. With 21 wrestlers competing from Newtown in the round-robin style tournament, the following boys took first-place medals: Forest Speed, Matt Gonzalez, Andy Hubina, Michael Garner, Sean Arnold, and Anthony Falbo. Second-place medals went to Thomas Leuci, Gren Paynter, Shaine Luzietti and James Leuci. Third-place medals were awarded to Joseph Praino, Ryan Wagner and Rob Schreiber. All of the competitors showed great effort against many excellent wrestlers from all parts of Connecticut.
In prior matches against local teams during the month of December, Over the Top Wrestlers in the elementary and intermediate school squad won two out of four contests. Overall team wins were recorded against Stadley Rough of Danbury on December 4 and 18.
The wrestling club is a youth program of the Department of Parks and Recreation. Members of the team range in age from 5 to 14. The season began in late October and runs through late April.
The arduous schedule involves two nights of practice each week and a match on a third night against local teams.
Weekend travel tournaments throughout the season are an option for boys who want to compete at the most challenging level. The Over the Top Wrestling Club is a member of the USA Wrestling Association of Connecticut.
