Marshel D. Baggett

Marshel Debes Baggett, 71, of Walkersville, Md., died December 27 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of 25 years of Betty L. Baggett, and the father of Newtown resident Scott L. Baggett.

Born in Sacramento, Ky., on July 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Fred Lewis and Bertha Mae Ward Baggett of Rumsey, Ky.

He was a member of the United States Air Force serving from 1951 to 1955 in the Korean War. He was presented with the Korean War Service Medal by Major Choong Soon Kang, ROKAF Air Attache, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, representing Korean Ambassador Sung Chul Yang, in company with Major Generals Nels Running, Executive Director, US Department of Defense’s 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee and Frederick C. Blesse (Korean double Ace), USAF, Retired.

He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 of Frederick, Md., the American Legion, Woodsboro, Md., the 75th Air Depot Wing Association, and 26th Air Division (Defense) Roselyn Reunion Group.

Mr Baggett retired from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in November 1990, as chief of the printing and graphics branch, and also worked for a number of years for Fredericktown Printing Company.

He was an active member of Glade United Church of Christ, Walkersville, Md., where he served as elder, Sunday school teacher, and on various committees. He was also a member of the Walkersville Kiwanis Club, a member of NARF Chapter 409, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US Post 3285 of Frederick, and a volunteer with the Glade Valley Food Bank.

He enjoyed woodworking, working on cars, and his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Scott L. Baggett and wife Sherri of Newtown, and Steven L. Baggett and wife Patty of Middletown, Md.; daughter Shelly L. Baggett of Martinsburg, W.Va.; stepson J. Scott Innes and wife Lisa of Frederick, Md.; stepdaughter Kimberly A. Iman of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Kenneth Wayne Baggett and wife Mary of Bremen, Ky.; and eight grandchildren, M. Scudder and R. Judd Baggett of Newtown, Jason Creed and wife Paula of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Daniel and Natalie Baggett of Middletown, Md., Marshel Iman of Hagerstown, Md., and Haley and Jill Innes of Frederick, Md.

He is also remembered by niece, Dr Angela Ray, and her husband Harold Gulley, as well as several other nieces and nephews, and daughter Shelly’s friend Keith Marken.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Ilene Ray, and brother Clayton Baggett.

Pallbearers will be Roger Lindsay, Hugh McVeagh, Bob Rippeon, Cassell Engle, Melvin Keyton and Timothy Dinterman. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren.

A Funeral Service was held December 31 at Glade United Church of Christ, 21 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville, Md., with the Rev Dr Terry Foor officiating. Interment was in Glade Cemetery, Walkersville, Md.
