Dave Samoskevich had one of those "I know those people!" moments recently.

The longtime Newtown resident was flipping through the December 30, 2016, issue of The Newtown Bee, and reached the page with "The Way We Were" on it. The weekly feature offers readers bits of news from 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago, culled from the newspaper's files. Each week's column also offers one photo from the past.

Sometimes the back story about a photo is known. Other times it is not. The issue of December 30 was one of the latter.

"Marked only as 'Sports,' this Bee file photo is dated August 13, 1982. A boys' baseball team and two coaches pose for the camera" is all that was noted about the photo depicting 14 young men in baseball uniforms and two adults wearing ballcaps with N on them for that week's Way We Were offering.

Each week's Way We Were concludes with a note inviting readers to share their photos, or help identify people or places in photos, with The Bee. Dave recognized the photograph from August 1982 very easily. He was one of the ballplayers in the photo, and knew everyone else by name as well.

"That was the Seventh-Eighth Grade Little League All-Star Team," he said January 5. Mr Samoskevich stopped in to the newspaper's office that morning, still very excited about the photo and those in it. "The photo was taken in late July or early August, and it was done at Newtown Middle School or Fairfield Hills. I just can't remember which location."

The timeframe of the photo works. The August 13 date, among other notations on the piece of paper taped to the back of the photo, would have indicated the issue date the sports editor of that time would have wanted the photo to appear in.

"That was a travel team," Mr Samoskevich added. " In July and August, we had a lot of weekend tournaments. We did pretty well. We were a good team."

He was in seventh grade at the time the photo was taken. Most of the boys on that season's team were seventh graders, in fact.

"Just three of them were in eighth grade," he said.

In addition to Dave Samoskevich, the team's roster that year included Jeff Adams, Neil Amaral, Dave Barrows, Rob Constant, Erik Krell, Billy Malcolm, Pete Padone, George Pappas, Greg Rooney, Charlie Spolar, Pat Sullivan, Kris Svenson, and Riley Walker. The team's coaches were Hank Krell and Dom Uliano.

It turns out the photo was misfiled when it was put into the archives a few decades ago. The photo, it was discovered this week, ran in the issue of August 6, 1982, and was part of a two-photo package of Little League teams.

Taken by then-Bee Sports Editor Bill Brassard, the photo is accompanied by a caption identifying the team as the 13-Year-Old All Stars. The team had played three games in the state tournament that summer, according to the paper, before being eliminated.

"The squad lost twice to Monroe and won its only game against Wilton," the paper noted.

Seeing the photo "brought back a lot of really good memories," said Mr Samoskevich, who still has the uniform he was wearing in that photo taken 24-plus years ago.

"I think they changed the uniforms after that season," he said. "So we were told we could just keep these after that season. I'm pretty sure it's still at my parents' house here in Newtown, too."

Dave Samoskevich was able to easily identify everyone in this photo, which ran with the December 30, 2016, presentation of "The Way We Were." The photo shows Newtown's 13-Year-Old All-Star team of 1982 coached by Dom Uliano, back left, and Hank Krell.
