Sherry Lynn (Burdick) Powell, 75, of Torrington, and formerly a longtime resident of Sandy Hook, died peacefully May 14, surrounded by her loving family.honanfh.com.

Mrs Powell was born in Brookfield on January 10, 1941, a daughter of Lois (Smith) Burdick and Leon Burdick.

Sherry married her soulmate, George A. Powell, Jr, six months after meeting him in 1964. They were married at St Rose of Lima Church and lived in a home on Hawley Pond early in their marriage. She worked for Dual Lite and later The Taunton Press while raising her family in Newtown and Sandy Hook.

Mrs Powell was a longtime member of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and also served as its president. Vacations and other commitments in June were always scheduled around her favorite event - the annual LobsterFest.

Known as "Grammy" and "Gram" to her four grandchildren and all of their friends, she was adored for her sense of humor, melodramatic card play, and countless thoughtful gestures. Each grandchild had a close and special relationship with her that will forever shape their lives.

An artist and poet at heart, Mrs Powell will be remembered for her love of Halloween and all things autumn, her incomparable holiday meals, and her devotion to family and friends.

She is survived by daughter Chris and husband David Dotson of Broomfield, Colo.; daughter April and husband Michael Carchietta of Torrington; grandson Vincent of Southbury, and granddaughters Sabyl of Torrington, and Avery and Addison of Broomfield; siblings Phillip Burdick and wife Grace of Brookfield; Francis Burdick and wife Carol of Danbury; and sister and partner-in-crime Gail and husband Jon Niles of South Carolina.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 40 years, her brothers Alan and Richard Burdick, and a sister, Fayleen Sauer.

Family and friends may call to Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown, on Thursday, May 19, from 4 to 7 pm.

Funeral services will be at St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road in Newtown, on Friday, May 20, at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in St Rose Cemetery, Sandy Hook.

Donations in Mrs Powell's memory can be made to Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue, PO Box 783, Sandy Hook CT 06482
