Republican council members have proposed an ordinance mandating that an economic impact statement be compiled on the long term costs the Town of Newtown could incur as a result of receipt of federal or state grants for town budgets. According to Democratic First Selectman Jack Rosenthal, such a measure is not needed, as his office would provide it if requested.

Residents of Ashlar of Newtown, the Masonic convalescent home off Toddy Hill Road, will soon be taking to the lanes thanks to donations being made by the Newtown Custodians & Maintenance Association, Local 3924, AFT/AFL-CIO. President of the school employees’ union Bob Strolin said the union is now conducting a raffle of ten turkeys, with the proceeds to be used to buy a bowling lane specially made for the handicapped.

Since Mrs Rose Knapp announced last week that she is taking steps to establish a Newtown Youth Memorial, she has heard from many parents and youth leaders and the idea has been accepted with overwhelming support, she told The Bee this week. The memorial will be marked by a plaque which will be hung at the Youth Services in Newtown offices on Queen Street.

The Charter Revision Commission (CRC) has detected a lack of organization in the form of Newtown’s government after listening to several town officials over recent weeks. “We need to clarify the lines of authority,” said CRC Chairman Robert Moore this week. Mr Moore said this is a bipartisan concern that the CRC has added to the charges it received from the Legislative Council.

All along Main Street, Newtown, the holiday spirit will shine on Sunday, November 5. A holiday house tour, a walking tour featuring eight historic homes and four landmarks on Main Street will be sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Newtown from 1 to 5 pm. Houses on the Holiday House Tour will feature decorations and flowers provided by local florists.

Preparations are being made for the annual Christmas tree sale by the Newtown Boy Scouts. Several years ago the Scouts planted some trees locally and a number of these have now reached a height of four to five feet and will be cut for this year’s sale. Trees of special sizes will also be cut to order. This year for the first time, the Scouts will also sell Christmas tree stands which they have been making throughout the last few months.

At a special meeting on Sunday, November 24, the Newtown Congregational Church voted to construct and addition to the rear of the church to house the new organ previously purchased from the Cannarsa Organ Company. The addition will be approximately 15 feet deep and 36 feet wide and will be constructed so that it can be almost entirely salvaged, should the church be relocated at some future date.

The Teen Canteen of Newtown is interested in acquiring a centrally located piece of property for the purpose of erecting a building for the specific use of Newtown’s young persons. The canteen has started a building fund from its two fund-raising projects, Melody Jones and the benefit movie. The canteen has grown so much that it now has a paid director, Mr Fernandez.

Dr Peter K. Denninger of Sandy Hook will open an office in the Shopping center on Queen Street, Tuesday, December 3, for the practice of general dentistry. Dr Denninger received his BA degree from the University of Kansas City, Missouri and Doctor of Dentistry degree from the Kansas City Dental School. Dr Denninger served in the Navy where he did special training work.

A Civil Defense disaster plan has been inaugurated at the Fairfield State Hospital. Personnel specifically assigned to coordinate the plan were sworn in by Dave S. Merriman, Chief of Operations, Civil Defense, Hartford, in a brief ceremony, which took place Tuesday afternoon, November 26, in Stratford Hall on the hospital grounds.

What is nicer than a piece of antique furniture restored for a Christmas present? So asks William Mayer, who lives on schoolhouse hill and the 50 years has been a cabinet maker. If you have any piece of furniture restored just give Mr Mayer a call. He does beautiful work and will be glad to accommodate you.

The Newtown Laundry which recently opened at the Blackman Block, under the management of Mr and Mrs Kettle are enjoying excellent business. Many local people have taken the opportunity to have this laundry handle their work. All clothes are sun dried.

Francis McNamara of Danbury has taken over Upham’s tea garden in Hawleyville, which in the future will be known as the Village Barn Club. The formal opening took place on Thanksgiving Eve and dances will also be held on Thanksgiving night and on Friday and Saturday nights. Music will be provided by Bob Cox’s orchestra and Mr McNamara has arranged to stage a floor show each night. The interior of the building has been remodeled and a new heating system installed.

On next Monday from 10:30 on, a showing of late fall and winter hats will be held at the home of Mrs Arthur McCollam, under the direction of Edna McKusic, assisted by Miss Betty Frisbie of Bridgeport. The public is cordially invited to attend this showing . The price of the hats will be from $3 up.

The world-wide George Washington Bicentennial celebration was brought to an official close November 24 with Thanksgiving services in the churches in honor of the Father of His Country. The United States George Washington Bicentennial Commission reports that Thanksgiving services were held by the churches of all denominations in every city in America and in the large cities abroad.

Frank H. Metcalf met with a rather serious accident one night last week. In backing out of the yard of Henry G. Carlson his car was struck by a car coming from Danbury. Mr Metcalf’s car was turned completely around, and considerable damage done to his car. Mr Metcalf was dazed by the sudden jolt, but was not injured.

 

November 29, 1907

The selectmen have placed on file with the assistant town clerk, Oscar Pitzschler, the complete reports of Frank E. Soule, the accountant, who has gone over the town’s books. These reports are open to the inspection of the public and anyone who really wishes to inform themselves as to the standing of the various town officials should take the time to look up these reports.

Saturday’s town meeting, called to hear the report of Frank E. Soule, the expert accountant hired to make an examination of the books of the town officials, called out an audience that filled every seat in the hall, while 75 or 100 men stood throughout the meeting which lasted fully two hours. For the first time in years, ladies were present, about 25 occupying seats in the gallery and watching with intense interest.

The general impression has gone abroad that the shortage of Tax Collector J.F. Houlihan amounts to $626. A careful reading of the report of Mr Soule will show that practically all of the $626 was collections made during the month of October and withheld from payment to the former treasurer by order of the selectmen. As soon as the new treasurer took office the amount due the town was turned in. Mr Houlihan feels that the wrong impression that has gone forth does him an injustice.

A pamphlet containing the very complete and interesting historical address delivered by Rev O.O. Wright at the dedication of the Masonic building at Sandy Hook, with other matters of interest to members of the lodge, is about to be issued.

Officials of the Consolidated railroad were in town, Monday, and in company with the selectmen inspected the work that has been done on a new overhead crossing above Hawleyville station. The work was left by the railroad in an incomplete and dangerous condition and Selectman Blackman called their attention to this matter. The railroad has already placed railings along the embankment and will do the other needed work in the near future.
