Scott Driscoll of Internet Safety Concepts spoke with Reed Intermediate School students on Tuesday, October 4, for a morning presentation, sharing tips and information about the internet, social media, and safety.More information about Mr Driscoll and Internet Safety Concepts is available at internetsafetyconcepts.com.

Mr Driscoll is a former youth officer and member of the federal Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, with more than 23 years of law enforcement and child safety advocacy behind him. He created his company, Internet Safety Concepts, to educate parents and students about social media, cyberbullying, and the long-term impacts of posting potentially sensitive content to websites, apps, and by text, according to a description for the presentations.

"He has been working to help police departments and families understand the internet," said Reed Assistant Principal Jill Bontatibus-Beaudry as part of her introduction of Mr Driscoll and the presentation.

Mr Driscoll said he has learned from his experience that education is the "key," as people young and old can forget to focus on safety when using social media and the internet. Sometimes people forget the internet shares information with the "world wide web," Mr Driscoll explained.

From e-mail to the Pokemon-Go app, Mr Driscoll highlighted ways students can focus on safety.

One way Mr Driscoll told the students they can judge their usage online is by asking themselves if they could show their profiles, accounts, and online friends to their parents.

"We sometimes focus on the fun. We need to focus on the safety," said Mr Driscoll, later in the presentation.
