Sandy Hook DUI Arrest

Police said they received a report about 8 pm on June 25, informing them that a vehicular accident had occurred on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Jordan Hill Road, so they went to the area to investigate.

Motorist Israel Morales-Ramirez, 43, of Derby had been driving a vehicle which rolled over, but he was not injured, police said.

After investigating, police arrested Morales-Ramirez on charges of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, and with following too closely. Police released him from custody on $250 bail for an October 4 court appearance.

Warrant Served

Police report they served an arrest warrant against David Gorman, 58, of Sandy Hook at his home at about 6:45 am on September 20, charging him with violation of probation in connection with a past incident.

At a court arraignment that day, Gorman pleaded not guilty to the probation charge. He was released on bail for another court appearance on October 12.

South Main Accident

Motorist Harvey Feldman, 58, of Hamden, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Impala sedan southward on South Main Street about 11:18 am on September 21, stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Pecks Lane and was then struck from behind by southbound motorist Emily Blankschen, 45, of Newtown, who was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler SUV, police said.

Police said Blankschen explained that a contact lens had fallen out of her eye, creating a distraction, slowing her reaction time, and resulting in the collision.

There were no injuries. Blankschen received an infraction for following too closely, according to police.

South Main Collision

Police report that at about 12:04 pm on September 21, motorist Raymond Maiden, 68, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that was towing a boat trailer with a boat atop it, was waiting in traffic on South Main Street, just south of its intersection with Botsford Hill Road and Meadowbrook Road, when the boat trailer was then struck from behind by motorist Mark Stephens, 44, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Express van.

There were no injuries. After investigating, police issued Stephens an infraction for following too closely. Police said they issued Maiden a misdemeanor summons for failure to insure a boat trailer.

SUV vs SUV

Motorist Austin Rick, 20, of Newtown, who was driving a 2002 Lexus RX-300 SUV eastward on Sugar Street at about 4:54 pm on September 21, slowed in preparing to make a left turn onto Rock Ridge Road and was then struck from behind by motorist Jason Breen, 33, no address given, who was driving a Honda Pilot SUV, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Breen for following too closely.

Interstate Accident

A two-vehicle collision happened on westbound Interstate 84, near the Old Hawleyville Road overpass, at about 5:30 pm on September 21.

In that incident, motorist Karin Helsel, 59, of Newtown, who was driving a 2015 Toyota Avalon sedan, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by a 2011 Hyundai Sonata sedan driven by Steven Kirschner, 63, of Springfield, N.J., state police said.

There were no injuries. Kirschner received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.

Sedan vs Pickup

Police said a two-vehicle collision occurred on Edmond Road near Schoolhouse Hill Road about 5:40 pm on September 21.

Involved in the incident were motorist Joseph Nungesser, 32, of Newtown, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla sedan, and motorist Patrick Loughman, 56, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, according to police. There were no injuries.

Nungesser received an infraction for making an improper turn, police said.

Highway Incident

State police said they charged two people following a road rage incident that occurred on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, at about 6 pm on September 21.

Police said that both people were throwing objects from their vehicles at the other person's vehicle, damaging both vehicles. There were no injuries.

State police said they charged Michael Elam, 26, of Danbury and a youth under age 18 each with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, and throwing objects from a motor vehicle. State police did not identify the person under age 18.

Elam was released on $2,500 nonsurety bail for an October 5 court appearance in Danbury. The youthful offender was released into parental custody for an appearance in Bridgeport Juvenile Court.

Hattertown Road

At about 7:30 am on September 21, motorist Chamkaur Singh, 56, of Stratford, who was driving a 2013 Nissan Frontier pickup truck northward on Hattertown Road near Oak Ridge Road, stopped for an approaching southbound school bus, which had its school-bus light signals activated, police said.

Northbound motorist Tyler Burns, 22, of Norwalk, who was driving a 2009 Subaru Forester SUV, then struck the rear end of the Nissan, police said.

There were no injuries. Burns received an infraction for following too closely, police said.

Subaru vs Jeep

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of South Main Street and Park Lane about 10:43 am on September 22.

Police said motorist Melissa Yitts, 27, of Newtown was driving a 2014 Jeep Wrangler SUV southward on South Main Street, as motorist Joanne Sikorski, 81, of Newtown was driving a 2014 Subaru Outback SUV eastward on Park Lane. The Subaru stopped at a stop sign and then proceeded onto South Main Street, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave Sikorski a written warning for failure to grant the right of way after stopping at a stop sign.

Jeep vs Mercedes

Police report that at about 4 pm on September 22, a two-vehicle collision occurred on Key Rock Road at its intersection with Sugar Street.

In that incident, northbound motorist Sandra Navone, 56, of Newtown, who was driving a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-300 4-Matic sedan, stopped at a stop sign and was then struck from behind by motorist Patrick Zingaro, 22, of Newtown, who was driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, police said.

Navone received a possible injury, police said. Police report they issued Zingaro an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

I-84 Crash

At about 5:26 pm on September 23, motorist Jaswant Singh, 30, of California, who was driving a 2016 Volvo vehicle eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, attempted to merge on the highway and then struck motorist Francine Weber 56, of Sugar Loaf, N.Y., who was driving a 2011 Toyota Venza, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Singh received a written warning for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Motor Vehicle Violations

Police report that while on patrol about 9:30 am on September 24, they stopped motorist Veronica Martinez, 27, of Waterbury near the intersection of South Main Street and Elm Drive.

Police said they charged Martinez with failure to obey a traffic control signal and with a driver's license violation. Martinez is scheduled to appear in court on October 11, police said.

Warrants Served

Newtown police said they served a warrant against Sarah Falcon, 32, of Waterbury on the afternoon of September 24, charging her with sixth-degree larceny in connection with an alleged theft on April 20 at the Stop & Shop supermarket in Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street.

Newtown police added they also served a warrant on Falcon on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court on behalf of the Southbury Police Department in connection with a separate pending larceny charge.

Falcon was scheduled to appear in court in Danbury and in Waterbury on the two charges, according to police.

Accident On I-84 In Hawleyville

State police said that at about 10:20 am on September 26, motorist Patricia Cannizzarro, 58, of Danbury, who was driving a 2105 Honda Civic on eastbound Interstate 84, east of the Exit 9 on-ramp, lost control of the auto, went into a spin, entered the median and then struck some guardrailing.

There were no injuries.

State police verbally warned Cannizzarro for failure to drive in the established lane.

DUI Arrest

Police said that at about 12:54 am on September 26, they stopped motorist Paul Veillette, 58, of Sandy Hook because he had failed to stop for a police officer's signal to stop in a construction zone on Berkshire Road, near Great Ring Road.

After investigating, police charged Veillette with driving under the influence and with failure to stop when signaled to stop by police while in a construction zone. After processing the charges, police released Veillette on $100 bail for an October 12 court appearance.

Spare Tire Hits Hyundai

While traveling on eastbound Interstate 84 at about 4 pm on September 26, a spare tire, which was attached to a vehicle that was being hauled on a 2008 International flatbed wrecker driven by Dan Lee, 42, of Preston, came loose and then fell off the wrecker, after which the spare tire smashed into the front end of a nearby 2015 Hyundai Elantra being driven by Tara Stevenson, 26, of Watertown, according to state police.

There were no injuries.

Lee received a written warning for traveling with an unsecured load, state police said.

Hyundai vs Hyundai

Police report that two sedans collided at the intersection of South Main Street and Country Club Road at about 6 pm on September 26.

The accident involved motorist Clare Swan, 57, no address given, who was driving a 2012 Hyundai Elantra, and motorist Inas Shanti, 24, of Ontario, Canada, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, police said. There were no injuries.

Police said they verbally warned Swan for making a restricted turn.

Mercury vs Chevrolet

At about 5:37 pm on September 27, motorist Samuel Pellicone, 17, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2008 Mercury Milan sedan, was exiting the main driveway at Newtown High School to travel westward on Berkshire Road, according to police. At that time, motorist Stacy Sullivan, 24, of Bridgewater was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt compact car westward on Berkshire Road, police said.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries.

Police report they verbally warned Pellicone for making a restricted turn.

Unsecured On Main Street

Police report that at about 4 pm on September 27, Thomas Edvin, 55, of Newtown was driving a 1997 Ford F-350 pickup truck, which was hauling a trailer with a riding lawn mower positioned atop it, southward on Main Street, near Booth Library.

The large lawn mower, however, had become loose and was hanging over the right side of trailer, police said. The mower then struck two unoccupied vehicles that were parked along the right road shoulder - a 2012 Subaru Legacy and a 2016 Nissan Altima, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Edvin an infraction for towing an unregistered trailer and for driving with an unsecured load.

Church Hill Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Church Hill Road at the driveway entrance to Hawley School about 5:26 pm on September 27.

The collision involved motorist Jenny Aliaga, 35, of Newtown who was driving a 2011 BMW328-XI auto, and motorist Bernadette Hayes-Vessup, 41, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Aliaga for improper passing.

DUI Arrest

Police said that at about 10:23 pm on September 27, they received a report concerning an erratically driven vehicle on Berkshire Road, near Tanglewood Lane.

Police report they located the vehicle in question and investigated, charging motorist Molly Bennett, 42, of Danbury with driving under the influence.

After processing, police released Bennett for an October 18 court appearance.

Interstate DUI

State police report that at about 2 am on September 29, they stopped motorist Ashley Penn, 26, of Southbury, to investigate, on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10.

State police said they charged Penn with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and driving with a suspended license.

Penn was released on $1,000 nonsurety bail for an October 18 court appearance, state police said.

Three Charges

On learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Ryan Gurga, 24, of Meriden went to the police station on the evening of September 29 and was charged with second-degree harassment. Police report that the charge stems from their investigation into a complaint they received August 28 concerning Gurga allegedly placing unwanted telephone calls to another person.

Newtown police said that while he was in custody, they also served two warrants against Gurga obtained by Wallingford police, lodging two counts of violation of probation against Gurga.

Gurga was released on a total of $20,750 bail and is scheduled to appear in court in Danbury on October 13 on the harassment charge, and also appear in court in Meriden on October 12 on the probation charges, according to police.

Luxury Car Damaged

Police report that at about 8:30 pm on September 29, a black 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-320 4-Matic station wagon, which was parked in a handicapped parking space at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street in the area between Stop & Shop supermarket and Fairgrounds Wine & Spirits package store, was struck by some unknown vehicle that had driven into the Mercedes' left rear corner, damaging the auto.

The offender then drove away without reporting the collision, police said.

Bad Check

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Andrew Drap, 48, of Sandy Hook went to the police station on the morning of September 30 and was charged with issuing a bad check, police said.

Police report that the charge stems from their investigation into a complaint which they received on September 12.

After processing the case, police released Drap on $200 bail for an October 18 appearance in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Main Street Collision

A two-vehicle collision occurred on northbound Main Street, near Church Hill Road, about 2:42 pm on September 30.

In that accident, motorist Isaiah Book, 19, of Danbury, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, stopped and was then struck from behind by motorist Christopher Johnston, 29, of New Milford, who was driving a 1994 Ford F-150 pickup truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Johnston for following too closely.

Truck vs Tree

Police report that Jonathan Lebeau, 27, of Danbury, who was driving a commercial 2011 Freightliner Sprinter truck southward on Hattertown Road, about 500 feet south of Purdy Station Road, at about 4:36 pm on September 30, encountered a deer that had run onto the wet road.

Lebeau swerved to the right to avoid striking the deer, but the truck then struck a tree head-on, police said. There were no injuries.

Police took no enforcement action.

Off-Ramp Rollover

At about 7:30 am on October 1, while she was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee SUV on the combined Exit 11 off-ramp of Interstate 84, motorist Erica Naugle, 21, of Forty Fort, Penn., encountered a curve in the roadway while traveling at about 45 miles per hour, state police said.

The Jeep went out of control, drove off the right road shoulder, and then rolled onto its left side, state police said. There were no injuries.

Naugle received an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions, according to state police.

Rear-Ender

At about 8:54 am on October 1, a line of vehicles on southbound Main Street was waiting at a red traffic signal at South Main Street's intersection with Sugar Street, South Main Street, and Glover Avenue.

After that signal turned green, a 1998 Nissan Frontier pickup truck there driven by Dennis Castellano, 55, of Danbury, struck the rear end of a 2011 Nissan Rogue SUV driven by Christine Anthony, 30, of Sandy Hook, police said.

Police said they verbally warned Castellano for following too closely. Police report they issued Anthony an infraction for driving without a license.

Warrant Arrest

Newtown police report that on the evening of October 3, they learned that Westport police had in custody a Newtown man for whom they held a warrant, so Newtown police transported Christopher Evans, 31, to the Newtown police station to be processed on the criminal charges.

Newtown police said they charged Evans with third-degree larceny, which is a felony, and also with illegal use of another person's credit card. The arrest stems from their investigation into a complaint that they received in July. The larceny charges stems from Evans' alleged theft of various tools, police said.

Police report they held Evans on $20,000 bail for an October 4 court arraignment on the charges.

Failure To Respond

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Edward Cedor, 65, of Sandy Hook went to the police station on the morning of October 5 and was charged with failure to respond to an infraction, police said.

Police report that Cedor had been issued an infraction in the past for allowing a dog to roam, but Cedor did not either pay a fine or challenge the infraction in court, so they received a warrant against him, resulting in his arrest and upcoming court appearance.

After posting $92 in bail, police released Cedor for an October 19 court appearance.

Larceny Arrest

Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for her arrest, Isabella Kowaski, 26, of Cheshire turned herself in at the police station on the afternoon of October 5 and was charged with fifth-degree larceny.

Police said they investigated a May 11 complaint concerning a January 4 incident that had occurred at a Mt Pleasant Road business. Kowalski, who was employed as a home health care worker when the incident occurred, allegedly stole some items from an elderly person, according to police.

After processing the arrest, police released Kowalski on $500 bail for an October 18 appearance in state Superior Court in Danbury, police said.
