Sign Stolen

Sometime between June 3 and June 6, someone stole a bright green sign from the front yard of a property on High Rock Road, near Grays Plain Road, which bore words advising passersby of the presence of a child in that area.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the sign's whereabouts to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Berkshire Road Evading

At about 8:08 am on June 7, a 27-year-old woman was driving a 2010 Subaru Impreza eastward on Berkshire Road (Route 34), near Liberty Drive, as an older pickup truck was traveling westward there, police said. The pickup truck then crossed the road's center line and struck the Subaru, police said. The truck continued traveling westward, police said. The Subaru driver was not injured.

Police are investigating the case of evading responsibility.

The truck was described as a late 1990s or early 2000s black and green GMC-brand pickup truck, which may have crash damage to its frontal area on the driver's side. Anyone with information on the incident may contact police at 203-426-5841.

Breach of Peace

Police said they received a complaint about 11:53 am on June 7, concerning a vandalism incident that had occurred at Plaza South, a shopping center at 274 South Main Street in Botsford.

The vandalism involved the use of a green marker to deface the hood and windshield of a gray Volkswagen Jetta auto, police said.

After investigating, police said they charged Elizabeth Townsend, 19, of 39 West Street, with second-degree breach of peace. Townsend was released on a written promise to appear on June 21 in Danbury Superior Court.

I-84 Truck Incident

State police report that motorist Margaret Lyons, 73, of Wilton, was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius westward on Interstate 84 and traveling behind a 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer truck driven by Joao Neves, 30, of New Fairfield at about 12:20 pm on June 7, when debris that fell from the truck's trailer and struck and damaged the Toyota's windshield.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Stop-and-Go

In stop-and-go conditions caused by heavy traffic on eastbound Interstate 84 near Exit 11 at about 5:52 pm on June 7, motorist Sergio De La Cruz of Waterbury, who was driving a 2006 Chevrolet 4500 pickup truck, struck the rear end of a 2010 Toyota Sienna minivan driven by Benjamin Noy of Waterbury, state police said.

There were no injuries. De La Cruz received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.

Car Down Bank

Police, fire and ambulance crews responded to an automotive mishap that occurred about 6 pm on June 8 at Riverside Road in Sandy Hook Center.

Police said motorist Carole Hoffman, 78, of Southbury, who was driving a 2006 Honda Accord in the parking lot of The Villa Restaurant at 4 Riverside Road, pulled into a parking space there, but then accelerated, causing the vehicle to jump a curb.

The Honda then drove over multiple shrubs, traveled down an embankment, went over two stone walls and then landed on a sidewalk, before striking a utility pole, police report.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps checked Hoffman and a passenger at the scene, but made no transport, police said. The Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company responded to the accident. Police took no enforcement action because the incident occurred on private property.

Altercation

Police said they responded to a Gelding Hill Road residence about 8:30 am on June 9, after learning that an assault had occurred between two co-workers who were doing some painting there.

Police said they arrested Jose Perez, 45, of Bridgeport on charges of third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. The adult male victim of the physical assault was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Police held Perez on $500 bail for a court appearance. Perez pleaded not guilty to both charges at his arraignment. He was released on a written promise to appear in court on July 8.

Outstanding Warrant

Town police said that at about 8 pm on June 9, after learning that there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest, Sarah Deflumeri, 27, of Danbury, went to the police station and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court.

State police from Troop A in Southbury made the original arrest in the case on May 10. After processing on June 9, town police released Deflumeri on $750 bail for a June 23 court appearance.

DUI Charge

Police said they received a report at about 1:09 am on June 11 that a two-vehicle accident had occurred on Riverside Road near Dickinson Drive in Sandy Hook, in which the person who caused the collision left the scene on foot.

Police said they went to area and conducted a search through which they found the man who had left the accident scene.

After investigating, police charged motorist Matthew Amaral, 31, of Southbury, with driving under the influence, evading responsibility and failure to drive to the right. Police said they took Amaral into custody without incident.

After processing, police released Amaral on $250 bail for a June 28 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.

Three Vehicles

At about 4:37 pm on June 11 at the end of eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 10 off-ramp, Wanda Nieves-Fintz, 54, of 53 Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty SUV, stopped at the traffic signal, state police said.

Motorist Matthew Mangiamele, 85, of 139 Louis Hill Road, who was driving a 2015 Chrysler 200 auto, then stopped behind the Jeep, state police said.

Motorist Brian Kruger, 21, of 32 Jo-Mar Drive, who was driving a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, then struck the rear end of the Chrysler, pushing the Chrysler into the rear end of the Jeep Liberty, state police said.

Mangiamele reported pain, but refused medical treatment at the scene, state police said. State police said that Kruger was following too closely.

Buttonball Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Buttonball Drive in Sandy Hook about 7:21 pm on June 11.

Police said that motorist Mary Kathryn Maureen Helmose, 19, of 10 Buttonball Drive, who was driving a 1988 Chrysler LeBaron, was exiting her driveway, as motorist Theresa Roberto, 23, of 24 Buttonball Drive, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, was heading southward and negotiating a curve in the road as she approached that driveway.

The Chevrolet then struck the Chrysler, police said. There were no injuries. Roberto received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions, police said.

Protective Order Violation

Police report they received a complaint about 8:30 pm on June 13 from a victim who was at a business in Sandy Hook Center, stating that a man had violated a protective order that had been issued against him.

Police responded to the scene and found the man in question, after which they investigated. Police said they charged Douglas Allan, 66, of Monroe with violation of a protective order.

After processing, police released Allan on $1,000 bail for a June 28 appearance in court.

Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters, as well as Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members, responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Commerce Road about 9:37 am on June 10. Police report that motorist Paulo Fraga, 35, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2014 Lexus RX-350 SUV westward on Church Hill Road, was attempting to turn left onto southbound Commerce Road, as motorist Elena Ramirez-Flores, 53, of Danbury, who was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry sedan, was pulling out of a driveway at 65 Church Hill Road and intending to turn left onto Church Hill Road. The two vehicles then collided. Both drivers may have received minor injuries, police said. Police said they issued Ramirez-Flores an infraction for failure to grant the right of way at a private driveway. (Bee Photo, Gorosko)
