Police Reports | December 28, 2016-January 9, 2017

UPDATE: An item in this series of reports has been modified on July 26, 2023 to indicate all charges being dropped against an accused individual, and to remove certain details regarding the arrest.

Bench Stolen

Sometime between December 28 and January 8, someone stole a decorative park bench from curbside at a residential property on Marlin Road on the road section lying between Marlin Road's intersections with Toddy Hill Road and Hoseye Coach Road, police said.

The bench had been used by the property owner as a place to wait for buses, police said.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the theft to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203 426-5841.

Ambulance vs Truck

State police report that Judith Jackson, 69, of Newtown was driving a 2009 Ford E-450 Super Duty ambulance for Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps on an ambulance call to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 84, between Exits 10 and 9, at about 3:53 pm on January 2. The ambulance carried two other ambulance staffers.

At that time, a 2016 Freightliner truck driven by Miroslav Lazarevic, 55, of Chicago was stopped in heavy traffic in the center lane of three lanes on westbound I-84, state police said.

As the ambulance was proceeding to the accident scene through the heavy traffic, the ambulance struck the driver's side exterior rear-view mirror of the Freightliner, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said they verbally warned Jackson for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Larceny Charges

UPDATE: Information received at The Newtown Bee on November 20, 2018 regarding this case indicates that all charges in this incident were dropped as of September 28, 2018.

Newtown police said that they learned on January 3 that Westport police had in custody a man for whom Newtown police held an arrest warrant, in connection with a September incident.

Newtown police transported the Norwalk resident to the Newtown police station where they charged him with two counts of sixth-degree larceny and one count of criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny. The charges stemmed from three separate incidents, police said.

Following arrest processing, police released the individual on $500 bail for a January 20 court appearance.

Chevy vs Toyota

At about 9:38 pm on January 4 on a two-lane-wide section of eastbound Interstate 84, motorist Peter Lombardo, 66, of Glastonbury, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in the right lane, attempted to pass on the right motorist Eileen Perez, 34, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla sedan in the left lane, according to state police.

State police said they verbally warned Lombardo for passing on the right.

Toddy Hill Road Collision

Police report that motorist Christian Acosta, 25, of New Milford, who was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck southward on Toddy Hill Road, stopped and was waiting to make a left turn into the driveway at 1 Toddy Hill Road at about 5:11 pm on January 5, when southbound motorist Jason Kelly, 17, of Stratford, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai Elantra, attempted to pass the Chevrolet on the right, but sideswiped the Chevrolet, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Kelly for passing on the right.

Commerce Road Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Commerce Road, near Church Hill Road, about 4:30 pm on January 6, police said.

Motorist Patrick Doherty, 17, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty SUV southward on Commerce Road, as motorist Iqbal Bansal, 71, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2013 Toyota Prius northward there, police said.

The Jeep then attempted to make a left turn to enter a driveway, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, police said. There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Doherty for failure to grant the right of way.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 7:42 pm on January 6, they spotted motorist William Tammero, 62, of Bethel driving a 2004 Mercury Sable sedan northward on Mt Pleasant Road, swerving within the travel lane and also crossing over the road's center line multiple times, so they stopped the Mercury to investigate.

Police said they charged Tammero with driving under the influence and with failure to maintain the proper lane. Following arrest processing, police released Tammero on $500 bail for a January 24 court appearance.

Snowy Highway Accident

Motorist Alexandra Aguiar, no age given, of Pawtucket, R.I., who was driving a motor vehicle on a snow-covered eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, at about 2:09 pm on January 7, lost control of the vehicle on the slippery highway and then smashed into the guard railing along the right road shoulder, state police said.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Interstate Crash

Along a three-lane-wide section of eastbound Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of the Exit 9 on-ramp, at about 8:51 am on January 8, motorist Charles Hill, 32, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2006 Nissan Altima, attempted to change travel lanes, but struck a 2002 Saab 9-5 auto driven by Melvin Stimmel, 52, of Brookfield, according to state police.

There were no injuries. State police said they issued Hill an infraction for making an unsafe lane change.

Dodgingtown Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Dodgingtown Road, near Dodgingtown Market, at about 5:09 pm on January 9.

Motorist David Martinez, 37, of Danbury, who was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck westward, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Michael Poulter, 19, of Newtown, who was driving a 2008 Volvo XC-90, police report.

Martinez reported pain and was transported by Danbury Ambulance to Danbury Hospital to be medically evaluated, police said. Poulter received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to police.
