UPDATE (Saturday, July 23, 2016): Newtown Police have released a video still and brief video showing the suspect in at least one of the five burglaries. The photo and a link to the video have been added to this story.

Police said late Friday morning, July 22, that they are investigating five burglaries that were reported to them between 3 pm on Thursday, July 21, and 3 am on Friday.

Four of the burglaries, which were residential break-ins, occurred in Sandy Hook, and the fifth incident occurred at a business in Hawleyville, police said.

Sergeant Aaron Bahamonde said police are investigating a possible suspect or suspects in the several crimes that involved both burglary and larceny.

In the incidents, windows or doors at the addresses were broken in order to gain entry, he said.

Among those cases, police received a burglar alarm at 3 pm from a home on Riverside Road, south of Bancroft Road, to which they responded to investigate.

At 4 pm, a resident discovered that a break-in had occurred at a home on Philo Curtis Road, north of its intersection with Elana Road.

Police said that at about 11 pm, a resident reported that a burglary had happened at a home on Toddy Hill Road, south of its intersection with Still Hill Road.

Also, at about 11 pm, another resident reported to police that a break-in had occurred at a home on Bennetts Bridge Road, north of its intersection with Gelding Hill Road.

At about 2:51 am on Friday, police received a report that a burglar alarm was activated at New Main Moon Restaurant at a retail center at 23 Barnabas Road in Hawleyville.

A 16-second clip from the home surveillance system was released by the police. The suspect in that break-in can briefly be seen in that video.

Police are asking anyone with information on the several burglary/larceny incidents to contact them at the police station, 3 Main Street, at 203 426-5841. Police said such information would be kept confidential.

Sgt Bahamonde said that based on the evidence in the cases, police expect that the same person or persons is responsible for the multiple crimes. Police did not provide details on the items that were stolen in the break-ins.

The sergeant urged that residents be aware of the rash of burglaries and to keep their properties secure to deter such incidents from occurring.

Any suspicious activity seen by residents should be reported to police promptly so that they can investigate.
