The town’s building official has sent the owner of a decaying Berkshire Road house a letter informing him that the vacant, rundown building has been condemned by the town due to its deterioration, and is asking him whether he intends to improve the structure to bring it up to habitable standards.
Chief Building Official John Poeltl said April 29 that he has sent homeowner Santiago Britt a letter requesting an immediate response about his intentions regarding the house at 82 Berkshire Road (Route 34).
Sometime between April 13 and April 20, someone intentionally damaged a truck that was parked at a construction site located off Oak Ridge Drive, police said. Police are investigating the vandalism and ask anyone with knowledge of the criminal mischief to contact them at the police station.
On Monday April 8, at approximately 6:58 am, Newtown police received a call from a Newtown resident explaining that his 2002 black GMC Denali full-size SUV had been stolen from the front parking lot at Newtown Mobil.
The gas station/convenience store is at 62 Church Hill Road, near the Exit 10 ramps for Interstate 84.
The theft occurred while the owner was inside the gas station making a purchase. The owner had left his vehicle running and unlocked during the time he was inside the store.
In anticipation of hiring additional police officers next fiscal year, police officials are starting to plan for the police hiring process, which is a sequence of events required to bring new officers onto the police staff, Police Chief Michael Kehoe told Police Commission members this week.
At an April 2 session, Chief Kehoe said that depending upon how the town’s budgeting process for the 2013-14 fiscal year transpires, the police department may hire three or four additional officers.
In recognition of the intense effort involved in handling the emergency radio telecommunications traffic that stemmed from the December 14 mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Newtown Emergency Communications Center at Town Hall South has received an Outstanding 9-1-1 Call Center Award.
Sharing the award with Newtown was a similar emergency communications center for Aurora, Colorado, where a mass shooting incident occurred in a movie theater last July 20.
Police said Monday they are continuing their probe into a series of shooting incidents which occurred in the darkness early on the morning of Tuesday, March 12, at four separate residential locations.
There were no injuries in the incidents which occurred on Alpine Drive, Saw Mill Road, Berkshire Road, and Brandywine Lane, Lieutenant George Sinko, commander of the police department’s patrol division, said April 1.
