A Garden Party at the Victory Garden in Fairfield Hills will take place Sunday, May 1, from 1 to 3 pm. All residents are invited to attend the free event celebrating the garden and the earth.

According to Newtown Parks & Recreation Assistant Director of Recreation RoseAnn Reggiano, "This is the first Garden Party, and we want people to be aware of the Victory Garden and that the food goes to the food pantries."

The Victory Garden at Fairfield Hills was launched in 2011, and initially located in the area of former tennis courts at Fairfield Hills. The garden moved prior to the 2013 season, staying within Fairfield Hills but relocating to a 20,000-square foot/half-acre space - twice the size of its original space - near the corner of Keating Farm Road and Mile Hill South.

Its mission has always been to provide fresh-grown local food to those served by Newtown's FAITH Food Pantry. Additional local groups have also benefited from the garden's harvests, which are created by residents working alone or in groups of any size, who are responsible for at least one row in the community garden.

Sunday's Garden Party will also have an ice cream cone project with cones filled with soil and seeds for families to take home to plant, she said. The Parks and Recreation Department is planning a day of fun children's activities and educational workshops including a featured local beekeeper, therapeutic llamas, juggling acts, and more.

Also, "Dr Joe" will bring his Creation Song Project, an interactive demonstration. All participants can play with drums and other instruments designed for the program that offers the healing power of music, and which will celebrate the earth, Ms Reggiano said.

Residents on Sunday will also be able to sign up for Newtown's compost program, learn about the Victory Garden, beekeeping, and more.
