Two days after the National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for Fairfield and Litchfield counties, the Forest Fire Danger Level remains at High across the state on Monday.

Very dry conditions across the state continued over the weekend, but Newtown's five fire companies did not need to respond to any brush fires.

As of Monday, April 25, the lack of a significant rain for a few weeks means the ground is ripe for brush and forest fires. As a result of the state's elevated level of forest fire danger, all burn permits that may have been issued for today have been cancelled.

Permits are never valid on days when Forest Fire Danger is rated High, Very High or Extreme. Permits are also cancelled on high wind days, or if the air quality is poor anywhere in the state.

For additional information concerning burn permits contact the Office of the Fire Marshal, at Newtown Municipal Center, at 203-270-4370.

Rain may reach the area by early Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service says showers are "likely, mainly after 5 am." The chance of that precipitation, however, is 60%. In addition, less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Periods of rain are possible during the day on Tuesday, also according to NWS on April 25. "Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible," the service continued.

As of the 11:30 am Monday, heavy rains are not being predicted for any time this week.
