Sandy Hook Elementary School’s library was open for school families to stop by on Thursday, January 16, to take out books while C.H. Booth Library remains closed for remediation work after a January 4 flood caused by broken sprinkler pipes.
Sandy Hook School library/media specialist Yvonne Cech said the school library was open from 3:30 to 6:30 pm, and was run completely by volunteers.
Roughly 30 families attended the event, and Ms Cech said people came in groups ranging from two to five. Every family, she said, was appreciative of being able to visit the library and check out books.
A visiting delegation from China was greeted at a morning pep rally at Newtown High School on Monday, January 27.
The delegation’s visit is overseen by the Newtown International Center for Education (NICE).
The delegation, which includes students and educators from Liaocheng, China, lined up across the floor of the high school’s gymnasium for the assembly.
“Let’s welcome our delegation,” NHS Principal Charles Dumais said at the start of the brief assembly, which was held prior to the start of classes on Monday.
A Parent Forum, hosted by the Newtown Public Schools Recovery Project, on “Depression Vs Normal Teen Behavior, How To Know the Difference” is scheduled Tuesday, February 4, in two sessions at Newtown High School. The first session will run from 9 am until 9:45 am, and the second session will be held from 6 pm to 7 pm, both in the NHS Main Office Conference Room.
Newtown High School has scheduled an orientation night for eighth grade students and parents for Wednesday, February 12, at 7 pm, starting in the NHS auditorium.
Attendees are welcome to come to the event early to take tours of the school. The NHS HAWKS Honor Society members will be available to give tours of the building beginning at 5:30 pm. Attendees are asked to allow at least 45 minutes for a tour.
Parents and children are invited to an Open House event at The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School, 40 Dodgingtown Road (Route 302) in Newtown, on Saturday, February 2, at 10 am. Waldorf education is a holistic approach to education that incorporates art, movement, and music into virtually every academic subject. In the early years, play is emphasized. Play, along with teacher guided activities, allows the child's cognitive abilities to unfold in a way that strengthens their desire for learning, according to the school. The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is Connecticut’s only pre-kindergarten through eighth grade Waldorf School.
Reed Intermediate School sixth graders who made it through preliminary tests into the school’s Geography Bee faced off on Tuesday, January 14. Cole Morelli emerged as the school champion. Reed sixth grade teacher Maura Drabik introduced an assembly of students to the school’s cafetorium for the event, and explained the proceedings and background of the National Geographic Geography Bee at Reed.
Newtown High School students who took the first semester’s Junior/Senior Project course presented their projects over two nights, January 7 and January 9, at the school. Each semester the high school offers students the opportunity to undertake a self-directed project of their choosing, which concludes with the presentation before the judges. During the course, each student works with a mentor to investigate his or her project.
Newtown Middle School students in the Lexus Eco Challenge group The Mean Green Machines recently met with their school principal and Interim Superintendent of Schools John Reed to discuss future plans for their group’s project. Team members of the Mean Green Machines are Nicole Germak, Romy Gold, Daniel Grosso, Dylan Sock, Joshua Dunn, and Cassidy Kortze.
The Newtown High School Gay Straight Alliance’s new website was created by NHS senior and club member Bethany Dubois as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. “I’ve been loosely involved with GSA since I was a freshman, and this year this is part of my Girl Scout Gold Award project,” she said. Girls working toward their Girl Scout Gold Award project, Bethany said, have to choose an issue that is important to them and create a project based on that. “So I wanted to work with our GSA to make a safe space online, because this club is really great and there is a lot of really cool people here. But there’s a lot of people that are unable to come to a club like this.”
Fraser Woods Montessori School will host its January Open House for parents of prospective students from 6:30 to 8 pm on Thursday, January 30, at the school, 173 South Main Street. For this open house, Fraser Woods will present a parent education experience known as The Montessori Journey. It is designed to show parents exactly what children experience in the Montessori classroom at all levels from early childhood through middle school. Faculty, administrative staff, and the director of admissions will be available to conduct guided tours and provide information about the school’s four- or five-day toddler and preschool programs as well as full-day kindergarten through eighth grade programs and a new parent and child program, Little Bears for children 18 months to 3 years and a caregiver.
