WALLINGFORD - Rock band Brand New headlined their much-anticipated 2016 tour with openers Modern Baseball and The Front Bottoms, and made a stop at the Oakdale Theatre on October 17.You're Gonna Miss It All, as well as material like "Everyday" and "Note to Self" from their newest record Holy Ghost, released earlier this year.Talon of the Hawk, and they ended their set with "Twin Size Mattress" off last year's Back On Top.Deja Entendu. They also incorporated classic songs like "I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spin Light" off their first album, Your Favorite Weapon, which came out in 2001.The Devil And God Is Raging Inside Me the band played nearly the entire record, including "Sowing Season," "Millstone," "Jesus Christ," "Degausser," "You Won't Know, "Not the Sun," "Luca," and "The Archer's Bows Are Broken."

Despite the performance unfolding on a Monday night, the show nearly sold out the 5,000-capacity venue, proving that nothing can get in the way of Brand New's loyal fan base seeing them live - especially with rumors swirling about the band's possible demise in 2018.

Kicking off the concert were the Philadelphia boys of Modern Baseball, bringing their endearing talk-rock music angst to the masses. The members shared the stage with unusual props like a store mannequin and ghost made from a white sheet, presumably for Halloween. The scene was further enhanced by a thick blanket of fog rolling out during their set, either from a hardworking smoke machine or evidence of the crowd's contraband.

Next up was The Front Bottoms, a New Jersey crew that calls their genre "Top 400" instead of "Top 40." Their unique sound of unfiltered, voice cracking, fraternityesque, indie music kept the crowd on their toes.

Band members drank from red solo cups between songs, sometimes even chugging their contents - egged on by the audience's cheers of approval. They kept the vibe casual as their stage set up included beer cans strewn about, multiple living room lamps, a tiny TV perched on a side table playing a movie, and a small sofa with two people on it sitting, drinking, and laughing. The only thing missing from their house party was the house itself.

The Front Bottoms played a variety of songs, including "Swimming Pool" and "The Beers," off their 2011 self-titled album, "Skeletons" and "Au Revoir (Adios)" off their 2013 album

At 9:30 pm, Long Island natives Brand New opened their 90-minute set with their newest single "I Am A Nightmare," which was released by the band's record company, Procrastinate! Music Traitors.

Following that was their breathtaking song "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" off their life changing 2003 album,

After playing additional fan favorites like "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't" and "Play Crack In The Sky," the latter of which caused a sea of lighters to fill the air, lead singer Jesse Lacey introduced the second portion of the set.

In honor of the ten-year anniversary of their album

Each song had the dedicated audience singing along with every word. The venue was so engulfed in music that the floor literally trembled from the sheer power of Brand New.

Behind the band members were five large screens projecting distorted images, sometimes depicting eerie ghoul-looking faces, and other times showing serene videos of colorful forest leaves. Before being able to fully process what was on the screen though, the image would pixelate or flicker out.

Ultimately, the band let their music speak for them, only briefly talking at the end when Mr Lacey thanked the crowd for supporting them over the last 16 years.

Excerpts from old footage of Brand New played in the background - mostly of scenes from their youth: smiling faces and the greenness of not knowing the scene-shaping road they would be paving. As the nostalgic glimpses faded, the band played their final raging notes, exited the stage, and the words "Brand New 2000-2018" lit up the backdrop, marking not only the end of the show, but the impending end to come.
