Celebrating International Education Week

Newtown schools individually recognized International Education Week this week, with a range of activities and events at the schools.

International Education Week, a joint initiative of the United States Department of State and United States Department of Education, is recognized this year across the country from November 12 to November 16.

The Newtown International Center for Education (NICE) in conjunction with each of Newtown’s schools planned events for the week.

Sandy Hook Elementary School got a jump on recognizing the week on Friday, November 9, when the Carnival Trio Caribbean Music group performed for students, sharing information about different countries, instruments, and music.

Sandy Hook School music teacher Maryrose Kristopik arranged for the Carnival Trio Caribbean Music group to visit the school on Friday.

“They are great,” said Ms Kristopik, “great with the kids.”

A special display was set up in the lobby at Sandy Hook School, and Ms Kristopik said the morning announcements for the week were also being tailored to reflect International Education Week. Each day a different language was shared during the morning announcements, she said.

One of the events planned for Newtown High School for the week is an International Community Potluck Dinner scheduled for Friday, November 16, from 6 to 8 pm, in the school’s cafeteria. People participating in the potluck dinner are encouraged to RSVP to nice@newtown.k12.ct.us, and share the recipe for their intended dish, which should feed six to eight people, to be included in a cookbook that will be put together by NICE.
