An Important Perspective About Trash And Recycling

To the Editor:

In the stream that runs through our property, I find balls of all sizes — golf balls, baseballs, soccer and basketballs. Luckily, they get stuck in a fallen tree where I can pick them up.

But if they made it to the ocean, they could pose a problem for sea creatures. So if you know a storm is coming, please go outside and clean up — not only balls, but anything that could get washed away.

On a separate note, I think it is a great idea for certain people to get special garbage bags to fill only two per week.

Even without special bags we can all try to fill only two or three standard garbage bags each week.

Did you know the average American creates 1,704 pounds of trash every year — per person?

A few ways to cut down on trash are recycling paper, metal, and certain plastics, and starting a compost pile for food scraps because over a third of the food in the US ends up in a landfill.
