It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Richard J. Rekos, formerly of Newtown, passed away on August 15 at Danbury Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born July 5, 1950, in Stamford to the late Edward J. and Margaret Helen (Gallant) Rekos.

Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1967, honorably serving in the Vietnam War. He was extremely proud to have served his country.

Richard worked at Pitney Bowes for 40 years, where he eventually met his beloved wife, Mary Koellmer. They became best friends before getting married on September 22, 2012. After retiring, he worked for several years as a Security Guard for Securitas.

In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his sons, Richard Rekos and his wife Krista (Lehmann), Brian Rekos and his wife Cathleen (Byrne), the mother of his children Mary Anne Rekos (Bob Della Donna) and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a large extended family, and longtime friends, Dennis & Anna, Terri, and Charlie.

He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, two brothers, his granddaughter, and lifelong friend Donnie.

In his free time, Richard loved playing golf with family and friends. He enjoyed sports, both watching, and in younger years playing and coaching. He also loved the beach and spending time with his wife Mary.

Richard’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored. Nothing made him happier than seeing the world through their eyes. Richard touched many people’s lives and will be truly missed.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on Tuesday September 3, 4-6 pm, at Danbury Memorial Funeral Home, 117 South Street in Danbury. The US Marines will be performing honors around 5:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers please consider making donations in memory of Richard to the Wounded Warriors Project.
