What’s Being Done About Outrageous Eversource Bills?

To the Editor:

My electric usage for last month was $97.36. My total bill was $283.73. I was billed $24.88 for Transmission, $66.25 for Local Delivery, and $51.26 for Public Benefits. This is unfair and outrageous. I am on a small fixed income. Even so, nobody should have to pay that many extra fees. What is being done?

Get ready for another increase in September. These increases are related to the state mandating that utilities could not shut off non-paying customers during COVID. Those bills piled up and now someone has to pay. And the folks who got the free electricity are not going to pay. I call this ‘mandatory charity’. You’d have thought that Hartford would have saved some of that COVID money they got from the Feds to cover this.

SEP increase is to pay for EV charging station infrastructure.

These price increases by Eversource will unfortunately only continue into the future. This is one consequence of living in a state that will not allow for the development of new base-load gas generation. As long as the state of CT relies on its older generating assets to provide power to a state w/ increasing demand, rates will increase. CT does not have the right topography for the installation of utility-scale solar generation and the cost and timeline of offshore wind is non-sensical. So, the unfortunate reality is that unless and until leaders in Hartford allow for new in-state generation, power prices to customers will increase going forward.

Remember California under Reagan…it had a thriving middle class…Then the Democrats took over and now it is a bastion of homeless poverty and misery…except for the Hollywood elite. If CT voters continue to elect Democrats, we may as well change the ‘T’ in CT to an ‘A’ as in CA
