Latest Increase In Utility Bills Is Harmful To Most Families

To the Editor:

I am disappointed in Connecticut’s democrat majority of state representatives. The substantial increase in the utility bills for Connecticut taxpayers is harmful to most families, especially those on fixed incomes and small businesses. These representatives and the governor were elected to represent us, the people, but instead of trying to help their constituents, they keep taxing and spending more. Most of the increase is due to other items that were state mandates such as shut-off moratorium due to Covid, EV structure mandate, people that do not pay their bills so now we are forced to pay for them. I don’t understand how that is even legal. These are just taxes they are forcing the power companies to add to the customer bill. The power companies cannot keep this additional charge, but these politicians get the funds without calling them a tax.

How many years has PURA been kicking the increase cost down the road? How many billion will they rake in with the new tax?

These price increases by Eversource will unfortunately only continue into the future. This is one consequence of living in a state that will not allow for the development of new base-load gas generation. As long as the state of CT relies on its older generating assets to provide power to a state w/ increasing demand, rates will increase. CT does not have the right topography for the installation of utility-scale solar generation and the cost and timeline of offshore wind is non-sensical. So, the unfortunate reality is that unless and until leaders in Hartford allow for new in-state generation, power prices to customers will increase going forward.
