8U Hawks Make Run To Regional Tournament Semifinals

The Newtown 8U Hawks baseball team played in the Cal Ripken New England Regional Tournament in Milford July 20-24. Newtown finished second in its bracket, going 3-1 in pool play, and lost a heartbreaker to Stamford in the semifinals. Game results are as follows:

Newtown 10, New Hampshire 0: Ethan Deming started on the mound for the Hawks striking out seven and walking four in three hitless innings. Santiago Puebla threw two innings of scoreless ball in relief. The reliever surrendered one hit, striking out three, and walking one. Newtown collected 13 hits in the game. Ryan Stott had three hits and five RBI, Bryce Memoli also had three hits, Sawyer Matta and Santiago Puebla each had two hits, and Anderston Sterner had a double for Newtown.

Arlington Massachusetts 9, Newtown 3: Newtown outhit Arlington 9-5 with Connor Plunkett leading the offense with three hits and a run scored. Bryce Memoli added two hits and Santiago Puebla had a pair of RBI.

Newtown 7 Milford (Conn.) 6: The Hawks won in thrilling fashion. They battled back from a 6-3 deficit in the top of the sixth inning to beat the Milford Bandits. Connor Plunkett, Ethan Deming, Nick Strong, and Sawyer Matta all had two hits in the game. Deming had three runs batted in and Strong had two RBI. Sawyer Matta pitched two strong innings in relief. Bryce Memoli threw the fifth and sixth innings, striking out four and allowing no runs, shutting the door on the Bandits.

Newtown 3, Milford (Mass.) 2: Newtown and Milford Mass. battled to a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Stott’s RBI groundout gave the Hawks the lead. Newtown pitchers struck out 11 batters on the day with contributions from Ethan Deming, Santiago Puebla, Ryan Stott, and Connor Plunkett. Nick Strong, Jordan Murphy, Anderson Sterner, Sawyer Matta, Santiago Puebla, Bryce Memoli, and Connor Plunkett all had hits in the win

Stamford 9 Newtown 8: Newtown could not hold the lead as the Hawks fell on a walk-off single in the sixth inning. Henry Murphy and Clinton Luckner had huge days at the plate for the Hawks. Henry Murphy was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Clinton Luckner was 1-for-3 with three driven in on a bomb double to left center field. Sawyer Matta and Chris Tortora had strong days at the plate as well, both adding two RBI. Stamford went on to win the New England Regional with a win over Arlington (Mass.).
