Yoshizo Nakano, MD, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 16.

Yoshizo Nakano was a psychiatrist practicing at the former Fairfield Hills State Psychiatric Hospital in Newtown.

Dr Nakano and his wife, Edina Nakano, who predeceased him, moved to Newtown in August 1970.

Dr Nakano was originally from the country of Japan, born in September 1928. He came to the United States in 1957, and obtained a job working in the Emergency Room at a hospital in Bayonne, N.J. However, Dr Nakano decided that his medical specialty would be practicing psychiatry. He was introduced to his future wife through a blind date that was arranged by a colleague that he worked with at a hospital in New York State. They were a true love story because Yoshizo and Edina Nakano were married on February 14, 1959, Valentine’s Day.

They were married for 54 years.

The Nakanos lived in Colorado where their first child was born. They decided to move back east to the eastern part of Connecticut, Norwich, where two additional children were born. Having decided to put down some permanent roots, they finally settled in Newtown, where they welcomed their fourth child. The Nakanos lived in the medical physicians housing on the grounds of Fairfield Hills State Hospital until they finally moved into their forever house in Sandy Hook in 1978.

Dr Nakano retired from Fairfield Hills State Psychiatric Hospital in 1989. Upon realizing that early retirement was boring for him, he went back to work, taking a position as staff psychiatrist at a hospital in New York State — coincidentally, the same hospital where he and his wife met and both worked at.

He finally completely retired in 1996, and placed his focus on his family and being a loving Grandpa and Great Grandpa.

Dr Nakano is survived by his children: Robert Nakano of Brookfield, Peter Nakano (Joan) of Southington, Steven Nakano of Sandy Hook, and Michael Nakano (Jillian) of Newtown; grandchildren Robert Nakano Jr (Katelynn) of New Milford, Nicolette Nakano of Stamford, Colton Nakano of Brookfield, Alexander Nakano (Abbey) of Branford, and Carter Nakano of Newtown; great-grandchildren Lukas Nakano, Vera Nakano and Flynn Nakano of New Milford; his brother, Haruo Nakano (Mikiko), and his sister, Asae Nakano-Yuge, of Kyoto, Japan; his first cousin, Gentaro Nakano (Yasuko) of Yamaguchi City, Japan; many relatives living in Japan; and his sister-in-law, whom he raised with his late wife, Gabrielle Gleason (Steve) of Woodbury.

Calling hours will be on Friday, August 2, from 9 to 10:30 am, at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, August 2, at 11 am, at St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road in Newtown. Interment will follow at Newtown Village Cemetery.
