A 34-year-old man from Newfoundland, Ontario, died last week from injuries sustained during a crash on I-84 in Newtown approximately 48 hours earlier.

CT State Police (CSP) reported the crash between a motorcycle and passenger vehicle occurred around 6:30 pm Wednesday, June 12, on I-84 East between Exits 10 and 11.

CSP reported a 2019 BMW x3 being operated by Lauren J. Melody, 22, of Danbury, was traveling on the interstate between Exits 10 and 11 when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Harley-Davidson 3HX being operated by Matthew Collins.

Melody and a passenger in the BMW were reportedly not injured.

Collins received “suspected serious injury,” according to the CSP report. He was transported at that time to Danbury Hospital by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue also responded to the crash.

A spokesperson at Danbury Hospital told The Newtown Bee on June 13 that Collins had been treated and released.

The following morning, however, the spokesperson said they had been given “possible misinformation” concerning Collins.

Collins was put on life support, according to an email from a friend of the family. The family friend also noted that while the state police report said Collins lived in Guelph, a city in Ontario, he was in fact a resident of Newfoundland.

The unnamed friend noted Collins had flown to Florida to pick up his motorcycle and was in the process of driving back to Newfoundland with it.

Collins “was the heart of our small community of 6K people,” the friend wrote. “He owns the automotive repair shop handed down from his grandfather to father to him.”

According to an obituary released on Sunday, Collins is survived by a daughter, his mother, a sister, grandfather, nephews, and girlfriend, among others. His daughter was his pride and joy, and he worked alongside his mother, running Matt’s Auto Service, also according to the obituary.

Following the crash Wednesday night, I-84 East was closed at Exit 10 and diverted for the next few hours, also according to the CSP report.

The case remains under investigation by Trooper Christopher Porrini. Any information or witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Troop A at 203-267-2200.
