Volleyball Team Defeated By Masuk In SWC Semis, Hosts Wednesday Night State Match

Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team, the No. 3 seed in the South-West Conference Tournament, jumped out to the lead before falling 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-14) to host Masuk of Monroe in the semifinal competition on May 22.

Charlie Hanson had 12 kills, Nate Twitchell and Cole Sgagliardich both had nine kills, and Warner Bacon collected eight kills. Eli Sullivan compiled a dozen digs, A.J. Zatulskis had seven digs, and Hanson added six digs. Sgagliardich had five blocks and Zatulskis came up with a trio of aces.

Masuk went on to push top seed Joel Barlow of Redding to five sets before falling in the May 24 championship match.

The Nighthawks are scheduled to get back at it in the first round of the Class M State Tournament on Wednesday, May 29. Newtown earned the No. 6 seed and a home date with No. 11 Woodstock Academy at 6 pm.
