Nighthawk Track Teams Compete With Pomperaug And Bunnell

Newtown High School’s girls’ track and field teams took on Bunnell of Stratford and Pomperaug of Southbury in meets on May 13 and 14.

The girls defeated Bunnell 97-53 and Pomperaug 106-44 at home on May 13.

Grace Lyons won the 100 meter run in a time of 12.02. Jessie Moore was first in the 200 in 27.44. Leah Morris took the top spot in the 400 in 1:02.29. Aashni Shetty was first across the finish line in the 100 hurdles in 15.76 as well as in the 300 hurdles in 48.67.

Newtown’s 4x800 relay team of Keira Budge, Leah Morris, Ana Morris, and Clare Csazer was first in 10:34.62.

In the field events, Newtown went one-two in the shot-put with Izzy Khazadian (28-08) and Faith Weir (27-08) leading the way. In the pole vault Ashley Cote (7-06) and Csazar (7-00) took the top two spots. Shetty won the triple jump with a 34-11.75.

The boys defeated host Pomperaug 89-54 and lost to Bunnell 81-63 on May 14.

The 4x100 relay team of Gabe Appiah, Grady Marks, Aydyn Gonzalez, and Hayden Bobowick was first in 43.31. Zach Clouden won the shot-put event with a 41-11 and Jack Chappa was second with a 40-00. Chappa was first in the discus throw with a 132-03. Dominic Simpri was first in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-02. Appiah won the triple jump with a 38-04 and Gonzalez was second with a 36-10.

NHS was runner-up to Bunnell in the following running events: Bobowick in the 100 in 11.37; Reid Karnas in the 800 with a time of 2:27.37; Ubay Dissa in the 1600 in 4:49.07. Bryce Maddox took second in the javelin with a 125-09 and Simpri was second in the long jump with a 19-00.
