Boys’ Tennis Squad Piles Up Wins

Newtown High’s boys’ tennis team concluded the regular season with a 6-1 win over Masuk of Monroe at Wolfe Park on May 7. The Nighthawks finish the season with an 11-1 record and second-place South-West Conference finish behind Weston.

In the win over Masuk, No. 1 singles player A.J. Singh won 6-4, 6-2; No. 2 Frankie Cannizzo won 6-1, 6-1; No. 3 Theo Anderson won 6-4, 6-3; and No. 4 Aarav Shetty won 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play the No. 2 tandem of Michael Berry/George Eppers prevailed 6-4, 6-2 and the No. 3 duo of Liam Conlin/Ryan Hislop won 6-3, 6-2.

The Nighthawks defeated host New Milford 6-1 on May 6. At top singles Singh won 6-1, 6-1; No. 2 Cannizzo was victorious 6-3, 6-0; No. 3 Anderson won 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 Shetty came from behind to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 doubles players Berry/Eppers won 6-0, 6-1; and No. 3 Conlin/Hislop came out on top 6-2, 7-6.

NHS defeated visiting Joel Barlow of Redding 5-2 on May 3. No. 2 player Cannizzo won 6-1, 6-2; No. 3 Hislop won 6-2, 6-0; and No. 4 Shetty won 6-1, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Berry/Eppers won 6-2, 6-2 and the No. 3 tandem of Conlin/Anderson cruised 6-0, 6-0.

The Hawks blanked visiting Stratford 7-0 on May 1. Top player Singh won 6-1, 6-0; No. 2 Cannizzo won 6-0, 6-0; No. 3 Anderson won 6-2, 6-0; and No. 4 Shetty came out on top 6-1, 6-1. On the doubles courts the No. 1 team of Briggs/Conlin won 6-1, 7-5; No. 2 Berry and Eppers won 6-2, 6-2; and No. 3 Cameron Linnetz/Atley Ammerman won 6-4, 6-3.

Newtown won five straight matches following a 5-2 loss to visiting Weston on April 26, beginning with a 7-0 home victory over New Fairfield on April 30. Two of Newtown’s other wins were 4-3 nail-biters — the April 8 season-opener against Pomperaug of Southbury and an April 25 visit to Barlow. The other wins were all by 6-1 and 7-0 scores.
