Writing Camp Returning

Margaret Brown, the Young Adult Librarian at C.H. Booth Library in Newtown, has announced that the Creative Writing Summer Camp for young adults entering grades 6-9 in September will take place again this summer.

Thanks to the renewal of a grant from Praxair Corporation of Danbury, the program will be available at no charge to students.

The program, which started last summer, spawned three distinct Creative Writing Groups for grades 6 and up during the 2004-05 school year.

Teacher Joan Verniero, who developed and led last year’s programs, will return to work with young writers again this summer.  She has an extensive background in both writing and instruction, and is currently a teacher at Masuk High School in Monroe.

She will be joined by adult writing volunteers Mary Maki and Philip Kotch, who also are returning and looking forward to the groups which were such an inspiration to them last year.

Creative Writing Summer Camp will meet on Thursdays from July 14 through August 11. Rising students in grades 6 and 7 will meet from 10 am until noon, while those going into grades 8 and 9 will meet from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

Each group is limited to 12 students, and preference is given to Newtown residents.

Registration can be done in person at the library’s Main Floor Circulation Desk or by calling the library at 426-4533. For more information speak to Margaret Brown, YA Librarian.
