On Saturday, August 17, Wall Matthews will be returning to Connecticut for the first time in many years to perform an evening of his compositions. The performance will be at Sound (Center for Music, Creative Arts & Mindfulness), a renovated historic chapel at 31 Hawleyville Road in Newtown. It will begin at 8 pm.

Joining Mr Matthews will be the cellist Adam Gonzalez and choreographer/dancer/actress Ara Fitzgerald.

Mr Matthews began his career in 1968 as a founding member of the visionary Entourage Music and Theater Ensemble. Since then he has continued a solo career that includes nine critically acclaimed recordings and performances throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He was nominated for a 2010 Emmy for his work on Yellowstone: Battle For Survival.

Now considered a “New Age” pioneer, his latest recording, The Dreaming Light, was featured on the nationally syndicated radio program “Echoes,” whose host, John Diliberto, described it as “a beautiful chamber folk ensemble piece.”

The recording consists of imagistic compositions for acoustic guitar with various combinations of cello, violin, viola, and soprano saxophone. The music is a blend of contemporary impressionistic acoustic colors. Listeners drawn to the work of Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, and Ralph Towner, as well as Debussy and Ravel, should find this music to their liking.

Mr  Matthews will be performing a retrospective of his works.

In addition to solo piano and guitar compositions, he will perform a number of guitar-cello and piano-cello duets with Mr Gonzalez.

Mr Gonzalez will also be performing some Sarabandes from the Bach Cello Suites. Ms Fitzgerald will be joining him as they revisit a number of selections from Words For Music Perhaps, a work they created in the 80s based on the poetry of William Butler Yeats. Sanctioned by the Yeats estate, they premiered this critically acclaimed piece in New York, produced by Dance Theater Workshop, and then went on to enjoy a well received run at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Ms Fitzgerald will also perform a solo, “Slow Dancing Is Easy,” which she describes as inspired by a postcard written to her more than a decade ago and sent from summer camp by her then-14-year old son.

“There were the usual few lines about the food (bad) and the baseball (good), followed by “PS: Slow Dancing Is Easy,’” Ms Fitzgerland has written. “In those few words I understood what had happened to him that summer. Years later I made this piece that muses on the delight inherent in that wonderful excuse — at any age — to hold your partner close as you shuffle your feet … left foot, right foot.”

The dance-monologue was recently performed in New York City at The American Dance Guild Festival, WET, and The Construction Company, in a living room performance in Los Angeles, and at the Zen Center of Chicago.
