Volunteers Sought For Bob Veillette 5K

WATERBURY — Anyone interested in being a volunteer at the 2009 Bob Veillette 5K Road Race and Walk on September 13 is asked to attend a mandatory planning meeting on Saturday, August 29.

The race needs volunteers to staff intersections and water tables along the race route and the shorter walk route, and to help with activities in Library Park, including the Kids Fun Run.

The mandatory volunteer meeting will be held at 11 am at the Republican-American newspaper building, 389 Meadow Street.

Volunteers should ring the security buzzer at the 389 Meadow Street door to the right of the main lobby, which will be closed. Once inside, they should go to the Newsroom Library Conference Room on the second floor.

“This is an all-volunteer event and we need dozens of people to make it work,” said Race Director David Krechevsky.

“It’s an especially great opportunity for high school students looking to fulfill their community service requirements,” he said. “Volunteers can work anywhere from two hours to eight hours, depending on their availability.”

If you want to be a volunteer, but you cannot attend the August 29 meeting, contact volunteer coordinator Stephanie DeLuca at sldeluc@yahoo.com.

Friends and family of Naugatuck resident Bob Veillette, who was paralyzed from the nose down after a massive stroke in April 2006, hold the Bob Veillette 5K Road Race and Walk as a way to raise money to help pay for his medical care so he may continue to live at home with his wife Bonnie.

The event will be held rain or shine at 1:30 pm, Sunday, September 13, at Library Park at the corner of Meadow and Grand Streets. Race day registration begins at noon, and volunteers are asked to arrive no later than 11:30 am.

This year, legendary marathoner Bill Rodgers is participating in the event. For more information about the race, visit www.Bob5K.com. For more information about Mr Veillette, visit www.BobVeillette.com.
