VNA Scholarship Goes To UConn Nursing Student

The Visiting Nurse Association of Newtown, Inc, presented its Anna E. Clow Scholarship, an award of $4,000, to Katie Rose Crevier on January 16.

Katie Rose is a junior at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, having graduated from Newtown High School in 2006. She is in the Nursing Honors program, and plans to graduate in 2010 with a bachelor’s of science in nursing.

Katie Rose has been a member of Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps since 2006. She also works part-time as a PCT in the emergency room at Danbury Hospital.

She is the daughter of Phil and Nancy Crevier of Newtown.

The Newtown VNA Anna E. Clow Scholarship is given in recognition of the years of devoted and dedicated service to the VNA of Newtown by Mrs Clow, who was a member of the nursing profession and chairman of the VNA Thrift Shop from 1946 until her retirement in 1968.

The purpose of the scholarship in her honor is to encourage interest and growth in the field of nursing by offering financial assistance to a graduating high school senior who is a resident of Newtown and entering the field of nursing. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of interest in nursing, financial need, scholarship ability, personality, and the recommendation of the high school guidance officers and/or the principal.

The scholarship is available to students entering a nursing program that awards RN (Registered Nurse) or BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degrees. Announcement of the scholarship winner is made during the Newtown High School Awards Program. The award to the recipient is not presented, however, until he or she has entered the clinical portion of their nursing program, at least into the second year of the nursing program.

Applications for consideration for the 2009 high school graduating class will be available at the NHS Career Center in March. Students may also contact Sally Schwerdtle, VNA Scholarship Committee chair, at 268-8333.
