Each year, just prior to Memorial Day, members of Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 place new flags on the graves of all veterans buried in Newtown, a way of honoring departed service members each May.

This year, said Donna Monteleone Randle, Chaplain for Post 308 and District 1, the VFW is seeking assistance from other organizations or individuals in town who would be willing to help place the flags. This is usually done the Wednesday before Memorial Day, which falls on May 25 this year. PTAs, scouts, garden clubs, civic organizations and individuals are invited to take part.

For information on volunteering with this project, contact vfwpost308newtown@gmail.com.

Hundreds of flags are placed on gravesites at every cemetery in Newtown each May. The cost of the project, according to the local post’s website, is approximately $1,500.

Donations are appreciated to help defray the cost for the purchase of the flags. Visit www.vfwpost308.com for additional information; the post uses PayPal for its online financial transactions.

VFW Post 308 is preparing for its annual placement of flags on the graves of every veteran buried in Newtown. This year the post is reaching out to the public, inviting anyone who would like to join the solemn effort to contact organizers.
