Troop 770—

Four More Young Men

Have Attained The Rank Of Eagle Scout

During a special ceremony on May 30, Troop 770 of Newtown awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to Michael Giglio, Devin Klein, Daniel Milot, and Peter Walsh. The troop is sponsored by St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church. Monsignor Robert Weiss gave the convocation and Troop Master Alan Page presided over the service.

The Eagle Scout rank is a performance-based achievement demonstrating proficiency in many subjects and fulfilling requirements in the areas of leadership, service, and outdoor skills. The fact that a boy has earned his Eagle carries with it special significance in scouting and in the worlds of higher education, business, industry, and in the community.

A Boy Scout must complete at least 21 merit badges, and achieve six rank advancements, passing adult review boards for each level. In addition, they must design and complete an Eagle project in order to advance to Scouting’s highest honor.

Fewer than two percent of all Scouts achieve the Eagle rank, to have four at one time is quite exceptional.

In addition to the efforts of the four aforementioned Scouts, St Rose also benefited recently from the time and talent of Troop 370 member Nicholas Wolf. As his project, Nicholas completed an open air chapel area at St Rose Cemetery so that parishioners can now gather in prayer, or for Mass, or for graveside services is the weather is inclement. His Eagle Scout celebration was May 30.

Michael Giglio

Michael Giglio started as a cub scout in the St Rose Pack 170. After rising through all the ranks to achieve the Arrow of Light, Michael joined Boy Scout Troop 770 at the end of fifth grade.

While in Troop 770 he has served as Patrol Leader, Scribe and Troop Guide. While troop Scribe he was the first Scout to act as webmaster and establish Troop 770’s website. Michael has earned 21 merit badges.

Michael attends Fairfield Prep, has volunteered at Ashlar of Newtown weekly over the past school year, and he will be attending Lehigh University in the fall.

Michael’s Eagle Project consisted of installing a fence and sign for St Rose Cemetery in Sandy Hook. He planned the layout of the fence and organized a group of fellow Scouts to install and paint it. He then designed the sign holder and organized a team to remove the old sign, paint and install the new one. Michael finished by installing flowers and shrubs around the base of the new sign.

Devin Klein

Devin Klein began in Franklin, Mass., as a Tiger Cub Scout. He has also scouted in Lake Oswego, Ore., and here in Newtown.

Devin has achieved many accomplishments through scouting. He has earned the Arrow of Light award, 29 merit badges, obtained both BSA and Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certifications, completed Junior Leadership training, and achieved Order of the Arrow membership. Outside of Boy Scouting Devin has volunteered as a big brother over the past year.

He has held the positions of Troop Scribe, Quartermaster, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Troop Guide.

Devin’s Eagle Scout Project consisted of leveling and landscaping an area of land at Newtown High School, creating usable space for the students and faculty. The project required more than 130 hours of labor and involved 21 volunteers over the course of three weeks. The project required resources and cooperation from the high school, and Newtown Parks & Recreation Department.

Next year Devin will be attending Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, where he will pursue a degree in engineering.

Daniel Milot

Daniel Milot’s Eagle project consisted of new landscaping for the parish of St Rose.

Daniel raised substantial funds for the project through donations and designed a landscape including trees, shrubs, flowers, and mulch. This project also included installation of privacy fencing slats to an existing fence to increase the security. Daniel completed his project by adding two benches to create a sitting area near the school playground.

Daniel started in Boy Scouts in Troop 153, sponsored by Saint Agnes Church in Westchester, Penn. While in Troop 153 he served as Scribe and Patrol Leader.

After moving to Connecticut, Daniel joined Troop 770 and has served as Troop Guide, Order of the Arrow Representative, and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He has earned the Arrow of Light Award, is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, attended council Junior Leader Training, and is a certified BSA Lifeguard. He has also earned 28 merit badges.

In the fall, Daniel will be a senior at Newtown High School. He is a high honors student, member of the wrestling and baseball teams, and a participant in peer leadership.

Peter Walsh

Peter Walsh began scouting as a member of the Cub Scouts. After being awarded the Arrow of Light at the end of fifth grade he joined Boy Scout Troop 770. As a member of Troop 770 Peter served as Librarian, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

Peter is currently a student at Fairfield College Preparatory School where he is a member of the National Honor Society. He also participates in the mock trial team and varsity rugby team. He will attend the College of the Holy Cross in the fall.

Peter’s project involved converting an open-air carport to a garage, providing important and safe storage space for the St Rose preschool. The execution of this project involved obtaining a building permit as well as drawing architectural plans. The project required the construction of foundations over four feet deep as well as the framing and installation of walls, which framed the garage door. The project required more than 200 hours of labor and involved more than 20 workers.
