Trails Day Hike At Holcombe Wildlife Preserve

Newtown Forest Association (NFA) is sponsoring a hike on Saturday, June 2, at the site of its headquarters: the 170-acre Holcombe Wildlife Preserve and Memorial Trail Properties.

The property is located at 55/65 Great Hill Road. The hike is being planned to correspond with the statewide Connecticut Trails Day, sponsored by the Connecticut Forest & Parks Association.

The hike will start promptly at 1 pm, rain or shine, and will take approximately two hours; however, there is an option to shorten the hike by taking an alternative route back to the parking area.

The hike will travel through the fringe of several hay fields, divert into the woods, back into hay fields, climb to an elevated vernal pool, then descend before concluding on the top of Holcombe Hill, the highest point in Newtown, where hikers will have an unobstructed view of Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield Counties.

NFA, a not-for-profit public charity, is one of Connecticut’s oldest private land trusts, preserving property since 1924, and currently owns over 1,100 acres.

Reservations are requested and can be done by leaving a voicemail at 203-270-3650 or sending an e-mail to NFAtreasurer@yahoo.com.
