The C.H. Booth Library invites young adults in grades 5-8 to test their knowledge of four great books, at the 11th Annual Battle of the Books Trivia Contest.

The game is played in a Jeopardy

®

style format, similar to the television show. All teams hear the same question together, write their answer in 20 seconds, and then display their answers at the same time.  Each team receives credit for a correct answer.

To enter, form a team of three or four Newtown students/residents — all members must live in or attend school in Newtown. Homeschoolers are welcome. Team captains must sign up the team by March 24, at the library, and pick up the complete information packet at the second floor circulation desk. This material is shared by all team members. There are no online sign ups.

Each team member reads the four books and becomes an  “expert” on the stories: The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde, One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann, and The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. Copies of the books are available in the Young Adult Department of the library.

Teams come up with and submit trivia questions about the four books; deadline is 5 pm April 14.

There is a limit of 12 teams. One or more team members must attend the April 22 practice round (snow date April 23). The Annual Battle of the Books is Saturday, April 25 (snow date April 26), from 10:30 am until 1 pm.

The first place team members each win a $25 gift certificate to an area bookstore. The second place team members win a $15 gift certificate to an area bookstore.  The winning team members’ names will also be inscribed on a plaque in the Young Adult Department, and each member may select a book that the library will purchase and dedicate in their name.

The Demented Bunnies Who Love to Read have won top honors for the last three years, but have aged out for the 2015 competition. It is time to name a new team of champions.

Details are in the Young Adult area, or online at the library website, www.chboothlibrary.org, or call YA Librarian Kim Weber at 203-426-4533 or Children’s Librarian Alana Bennison at 203-426-3851.

The three-time champions of the Annual Battle of the Books, The Demented Bunnies Who Love to Read, from left, Nicole Palmieri, Katy Cassetta, Helena Szabo, and Arianna Shovak, have aged out of the competition, and a new winning team will be named following the April 25 event at C.H. Booth Library.
C.H. Booth Library will host the 11th Annual Battle of the Books, for readers in grades 5-8, on Saturday, April 25. The titles for this year’s competition have been announced.
