The Refugees' Journey

To the Editor:

Recently, the Interfaith Partnership for Refugee Resettlement (IPRR) bid fond farewell to the family of six it sponsored in 2016. After six months in Danbury, the family's cousin welcomed them to Grand Rapids, Mich. Although we miss them greatly, we are pleased they are enjoying their new home. This was a tremendous challenge for all of us. Yet, we went beyond all expectations with strength and resiliency. We look forward to future sponsorships.

Imagine how our sponsored family felt flying toward America - joy and fear of leaving their 15-year home in the African refugee camp and coming to a new home of freedom. In the airport, awaited several IPRR members - joy and fear of greeting their first refugee family and not knowing what the future held.

And yet, it became a match made in heaven. Refugees opening their hearts to our loving embrace.

Thank you to everyone who... offered advice on how to prepare for their arrival; made a very special Danbury home and prepared a welcoming meal; ensured they had the basics: a roof over their head, food, clothing, a secure place to sleep, and a safe shelter; helped them receive needed medical care; completed the City of Danbury paperwork and its many forms; offered expert personal finance and legal advice; tutored English and homework and translation expertise; drove whenever, wherever needed; shared time with them at many events and activities; helped with the difficult school transition; and listened to their concerns and shared in their happiness.

On Behalf of IPRR,

Sharon L. Cohen
