The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified.

A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.

Babson College — Babson College is a premier business school. It has a top 20 undergraduate business program. This prestigious four-year scholarship is worth more than $170,000 plus access to additional funds to support unique educational goals. The application must be submitted with the college application. Check the website for further information www.weissmanscholars.org.

Coca Cola Scholars Program — 50 scholarships worth $20,000 and 200 worth $10,000 for use at accredited US colleges or universities will be awarded through the national Coca Cola Scholars Program. A minimum 3.0 grade point average at the end of junior year of high school is required. All applications must be completed online at the website. All applications must be received by October 31. Semifinalists are notified of their selection in mid-November and are asked to submit supporting application documents by mid-January.

Davidson College Scholarships — The Bryan Scholars Program offers two scholarships, one each to a female and male scholar athlete in each entering class. The scholarships are valued at $30,000 annually, totaling $120,000 during the recipients’ Davidson careers. Every finalist in the Bryan Scholars competition will be named a Davidson Scholar. The Davidson Scholars Program awards range from $5,000 to $20,000. A school nomination is required by September 25. A high school may nominate up to three individuals. Go to the website link to download a nomination form and proper procedures. Once a student is nominated, you must submit an application for admission by October 15. Horatio Alger Scholarship Program — This national scholarship program is for high school seniors with a strong commitment to pursuing a bachelor’s degree and critical financial need. Applicants should demonstrate involvement in co-curricular and community activities. Students must submit an online application. Frequently asked questions are available at the website. The deadline is October 30.

Intel Science Talent Search — This is America’s oldest and most highly regarded precollege science contest. It encourages talented high school seniors to pursue careers in science, math, engineering and medicine. Each of 300 students named as a semifinalist in the program will receive $1,000. Finalists receive larger scholarships. Complete information is available at the website sciserv.org/Sts/students/rules.asp. The deadline is November 17.

Principals Leadership Award — The Principals Leadership Award is a national award program that recognizes outstanding student leaders. Scholarships will be awarded to honor outstanding student leaders from across the country with awards from $1,000 to $12,000 each. Winners are selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. Students are also required to write an essay. Interested students should complete a nomination form online at aim.applyists.net/PLA. Print out the completed form and hand deliver to Mrs Latowicki in the NHS Career Center by November 15 in order to be considered for the nomination. The school will forward one application by the posted deadline date of December 3.

Ron Brown Scholar Program — Each year up to 20 high school seniors from across the United States will each receive $10,000 annually for four years for full-time undergraduate study as Ron Brown Scholars. Applicants must be African American US citizens or permanent residents who have demonstrated high academic achievement, show exceptional leadership potential, and have made a significant contribution to their community through community service. There are two application deadlines. Applications received by November 1 will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program and be forwarded to a select and limited number of additional colleges and scholarship providers. Applications received by January 9 will be considered only for the Ron Brown Scholar Program. The website has complete information and applications should be downloaded at www.ronbrown.org.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards — For high school students of any grade who have had outstanding involvement in a volunteer community service activity performed within the last year. Newtown High School will select one applicant to be forwarded to the state round of judging. State level honorees receive $1,000. All applications should be completed online at www.prudential.com/spirit. Students should print out their application and submit it to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by October 19 to be evaluated by the NHS administration. One local honoree will be certified by November 8 and eligible for the state-level judging. The state level honorees will be announced in February.

Siemens Competition — The Siemens Competition seeks to promote excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects. It fosters intensive research that improves students’ understanding of the value of scientific study and informs their consideration of future careers in math, science, engineering, and/or technology. Individual entrants must be seniors who expect to graduate from high school with the Class of 2011. Team participants consist of two or three members from any level of high school. Scholarships for winning projects range from $1,000 to $100,000. There are regional and national winners in this competition. US citizenship or permanent residency is required. United States Youth Senate Program — The United States Youth Senate Program is a national initiative to provide an opportunity for talented juniors and seniors with demonstrated leadership abilities to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes and encourage them to pursue their interest in professions in public service. Two students from Connecticut will be selected to travel to Washington, D.C., for a weeklong internship in March. These two students will also each receive a $5,000 scholarship. Eligible students must either be juniors or seniors who have not previously been a delegate to this program. Applicants must be interested in entering a public service profession or seeking public office in the future. Students must meet specific leadership criteria outlined in the application packet regarding demonstrated leadership. Students must be permanent residents of the United States. All applicants from NHS should complete the student application and turn it in to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by September 29 in order to be considered for a school nomination. Only two students from NHS may be nominated. The applications are available in the Career Center.

University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars Foundation — NHS is eligible to nominate one exceptionally talented senior for the Jefferson Scholars Program at the University of Virginia. The program is a full and renewable scholarship for four years. This national program should be a target for students who best represent excellence in the areas of leadership, scholarship and citizenship. Information is available on the Jefferson Scholar Foundation website, www.jeffersonscholars.org. Students applying early decision to another school should not apply for this scholarship. Guidance counselor involvement is required for nomination. If you are interested in being nominated, see Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by September 27. Applications must be completed electronically by November 1.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Award — For the past 16 years, Wendy’s Restaurants and the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee have sponsored the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which honors both male and female students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. The application process is open to all rising senior student athletes (Class of 2011) who work hard, are dedicated, and have become role models for the school’s underclassmen. The application period extends through October 3. Applicants must have at least a B average and participate at school in at least one school-sponsored sport. The online nomination form must be completed by students and reviewed and confirmed by a high school official. The website has complete details, www.wendyheisman.com.

UConn Nutmeg Scholarship — The Nutmeg Scholarship was instituted by the University of Connecticut in 1993 to attract and retain Connecticut’s brightest and most talented students. The scholarships are offered on a competitive basis for those students who have exemplary academic and co-curricular records. Each high school may nominate a maximum of two students for this scholarship. These students can be finalists or semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, National Hispanic Recognition Program, and the National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, one outstanding student that is as competitive may also be nominated to apply.

UConn Day of Pride Scholarship — The Day of Pride Scholarship is for first-time freshman and is awarded to outstanding Connecticut high school seniors from disadvantaged backgrounds who have proven academic ability as demonstrated through high school grades, test scores, class rank, and letters of recommendation. In addition to a commitment to diversity and multiculturalism, demonstrated leadership, and contributions to their community, students should have documented financial need. Applications will be distributed by the Career Center. Awards are based upon a competitive selection process. This scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, room and board (some restrictions may apply).
