The Battle of Gettysburg, Day One

BROOKFIELD — Peter Cronin, a member of the Brookfield Historical Society Board of Directors, will give a lecture and visual presentation on Day One of the great American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg on Monday, April 2, at 7:30 pm. Admission is free.

The lecture will be at the society’s museum located at the intersection of Routes 25 and 133.

The presentation is part one of a three part series on the most significant battle of the war, which took place in an unlikely and tranquil community in south central Pennsylvania. The presentation will focus on the events leading up to the fateful confrontation and the action, which took place during and shortly after the lines of battle were formed on July 1, 1863.

On that day an accidental confrontation of two opposing brigades eventually mushroomed into the costliest battle of the war, resulting in more than 51,000 casualties, a devastating defeat for the confederacy and what historians unanimously consider to be the turning point of the war.

Mr Cronin’s discussion will be part of the continuing forum on the Civil War sponsored by the historical society. Attendees are encouraged to bring any Civil War memorabilia they possess. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

For more information on this and other public programs being offered by the society call 740-8140 or visit BrookfieldCTHistory.org.
