Tennis Teams Battle On The Courts

Newtown High School's girls' tennis team defeated visiting New Milford 6-1 on April 11, and fell 4-3 to host Joel Barlow of Redding on April 17. The boys had one match this past week and blanked host New Milford 7-0, on April 12.

For the girls' squad, against New Milford, singles players Marie Ann Tomaj and Amanda Berry both posted 6-0, 6-0 victories, Megan Cooney won 6-1, 6-1, and Julia Dolan won 6-4, 7-6. In doubles play, the second doubles team of Hayley Lambert and Julia Klein won 6-0, 6-0, and the No. 3 tandem of Peyton Bradley and Mary Celentano prevailed 6-2, 6-1.

Against Barlow, Tomaj and Maddie Massey played a three-set thriller, with Tomaj coming from behind and battling to a 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory at first singles. Klein won at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 doubles players Sophie Wolfman and Jen Lorenz won by default.

The boys played 8 game pro sets and got singles victories from Constantine Vogiatzis (8-3), Jackson Dooley (8-2), Nihar Soman (8-4), and Ben Futterman (8-5). In doubles play, the teams of Matt Weisgerber and Chris Lindsay, Julian Totir and Rushil Jefry, and Jacob Shuman and Phillip Mack all won 8-1.
