Swim Team Wins A Pair Of Meets

Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team defeated visiting Stratford 96-61 on October 15. Newtown clinched the victory after the 200 yard freestyle relay event and exhibitioned the last three races. The Nighthawks went on the road and topped Immaculate of Danbury/Bethel, at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, 103-78, on October 18.

Results of the Stratford meet are as follows:

The 200 medley relay team of Mary Hufziger, Maddie Carter, Alex Ferris, and Lianna Perazzo finished first in a time of 2:06.33. Julia DiMartino won the 200 freestyle race in 2:18.24 and Emma Riebe was second in 2:20.25. Carter was runner-up in the 200 individual medley race with a time of 2:26.52. Perazzo and Keeley Baumann finished first and second in the 50 free with times of 28.68 and 31.37.

Sarah MacMullan won the diving competition with a score of 184.45, and Kiera Sughrue was second with a score of 181.35.

DiMartino won the 100 butterfly race in 1:13.68, and Berry was second with a time of 1:16,50. Hufziger and Riebe had a one-two finish in the 100 free, finishing in 56.44 and 1:03.79. Grace Bertsche won the 500 free, making her final touch in 6:05.74, and Cecilia Schoeni was second in 6:37.12. The 200 free relay team of DiMartino, Perazzo, Berry, and Carter, was first in 1:56.11.

Hufziger had the fastest 100 backstroke time, finishing in 1:03.81. Carter was the fastest in the 100 breaststroke race, with a time of 1:16.73. The 400 free relay contingent of Schoeni, Baumann, Natalie Barden, and Ferris, was the first to finish with a time of 4:03.65.

Results of the Immaculate/Bethel meet are as follows:

The 200 medley relay team of Hufziger, Carter, Renkert, and Perazzo was second in 2:02.55. DiMartino won the 200 free in 2:15.90, and Riebe was second in 2:17.14. Carter placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:27.72. Baumann won the 50 free in 25.69.

Sughrue won the diving competition with a score of 208.90, and MacMullan was second with a score of 167.45.

DiMartino had Newtown's best time in the 100 butterfly race and finished third in 1:12.98. Perazzo was runner-up in the 100 free in 1:01.75. Bertsche was first in the 500 free with a time of 6:05.04.

The 200 free relay team of DiMartino, Perazzo, Berry, and Carter was first in 1:54.71. Hufziger won the backstroke race in 1:02.32. Carter was first in the breaststroke event with a time of 1:15.77, and Lily van der Kroef was second in 1:19.99.
