Swim Team Dominates Against Oxford

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team earned a 108-65 win over visiting Oxford on December 30, evening its record to 1-1 as the team gets ready for a January 7 visit from Bethel.

Against Oxford, with the outcome no longer in doubt, the Hawks exhibitioned the last few events, and the Nighthawks had the best times in all but one competition — the 100 yard butterfly race. Diver Ryan Nathenson took top honors with a score of 145.73, qualifying him for the South-West Conference championships in only his second meet. Swimming results are as follows:

200 medley relay: 1. Richard Huffman, Hannah Malaris, Dawson Stout, and Owen Gray, 1:52.98.

200 freestyle: 1. Zach Payne, 1:58.75.

200 individual medley: 1. Huffman, 2:08.56.

50 free: 1. Jacob Branchflower, 24.60.

100 free: 1. Branchflower, 53.41.

500 free: 1. Payne, 5:15.83.

200 free relay: Tommy Horan, Gray, Payne, and Branchflower, 1:40.34.

100 backstroke: 1. Huffman, 59.34.

100 breaststroke: 1. Seth Barrett, 1:11.13.

400 free relay: 1. Stout, Branchflower, Payne, and Huffman, 3:39.69.
