Swim Squad Edges Brookfield To Place Third In Conference Meet

Update: Mary Hufziger's third-place result in the backstroke race was omitted when this article was posted; the information has been added.

Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team placed third in the South-West Conference championships, which began with the diving finals at New Fairfield High on October 25 and concluded with the swimming events, at Masuk High in Monroe, on October 28.

The Nighthawks scored 323.5 points to edge Brookfield, which recorded 319 points. Weston, with 590, won the competition. Pomperaug of Southbury, with 404, was second. Host Masuk had 268 points and finished fifth among 11 schools.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Mary Hufziger, Maddie Carter, Olivia Renkert, and Caroline Mahoney placed third in a time of 1:55.54.

In the 200 individual medley race, Renkert placed fifth, clocking in at 2:20.65.

Carter was fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.76; Renkert was sixth in 1:02.91.

In the 100 freestyle race, Hufziger placed second, making her final touch in 53.56; Mahoney was fifth in the 100 in a time of 57.62.

Hufziger was third in the backstroke event, finishing in 1:01.10.

Carter came in fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.78.

In the 400 free relay race, Mahoney, Emma Riebe, Renkert, and Hufziger placed fifth in 3:52.29.

During the race, Newtown Coach Becky Osborne noted that the Nighthawks were recording personal best times, logging more state championship qualifiers, and performing at a high level across the board.

"They're really setting themselves up for a positive postseason. All their hard work is really paying off," Osborne said.
