Superintendent’s Awards Announced

On Monday, May 15, Dr Evan Pitkoff announced the winners of the 2006 Superintendent Student of the Year Awards. The awards are based on community service and service to others, academic prowess, and leadership to the school and community. Two students from Newtown Middle School and two from Newtown High School were selected. Middle school winners were Shannon Zamary and Tyler Davenport. Winners from the high school were Victoria Marlin and George Schork.

According to notes submitted by Dr Pitkoff:

“Shannon Zamary is a very conscientious young lady who has a phenomenal work ethic. She quietly and unobtrusively works to support others. Shannon is also very respectful of teachers and students. She is a Girl Scout and is involved in Irish dancing, takes music lessons, and has competed at UConn in the Fuel Cell Car Race.

“Tyler Davenport is a kind and personable young man who sees ways to help others and will always make himself available to follow through with that help. Tyler is a conscientious student with strong academics and also provides assistance with the middle school clusters. He is an excellent role model and leader.

“Victoria Marlin is a loving, compassionate, and creative young lady. She has a unique zest for life and is wise beyond her years. Tory is ranked in the top three percent of this year’s graduating class and is in the National Honor Society, Drama Club, and a member of the Honors Concert Choir. She is always friendly, giving, and has a smile on her face. Her skills as a leader along with her unique blend of talent, altruism, grace, and academic ability will help her achieve much success.

“George Schork is a generous, thoughtful, sincere, and hard-working young man. He has an open mind and accepts others for who they are without passing judgment. George is a dedicated student who has earned honors and high honors every marking period of his high school years. He was nominated to be in the Peer Mentoring group because of his special qualities and has become one of our top mentors due to his patience and sincere approach with students he works with. George will be a true success in whatever path in life he chooses to follow.”
