Summer Sports Camps And Clinics

A variety of camps and clinics are offered for athletes during the summer months. Details, including how to sign up, are as follows:

Baseball Academies

Matt Memoli, coach of Newtown High School's baseball team, will hold two weeks of summer baseball camps at Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook.

Youth Baseball Academy: Players will receive an intense workout and will learn the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, throwing, and base running. Players will also take part in instructional and live games each day. For players 6-11 years old. June 20-24 and July 11-15, from 9 am to noon. Cost: $205. Middle School Academy: This program is designed specifically for the middle school baseball player to develop the skills necessary to perform at the next level. Players will learn hitting, fielding, and base running fundamentals. For players 12-14 years old. June 20-24 and July 11-15, from 9 am to noon. Cost: $205. Slamma Jamma All Sports

The Slamma Jamma All Sports Camp sponsored by Newtown Parks and Recreation is scheduled to take place at Hawley School, 29 Church Hill Road, during the week of June 20-24. The camp, for girls and boys, is directed by Newtown's Joe DeVellis, who teaches at Westhill High School, and has coached in the football, basketball and baseball programs at the school.

Session 1 is a half-day program (9 am to noon) for ages 4-11. Session 2 is a full-day program (9 am to 3 pm) is for ages 7-12. Cost is mornings $125, full days $165.

The schedule will involve a variety of sports and activities based on the age, experience and skill level of the campers. The emphasis will be on fun, sportsmanship and fair play. A few of the activities include basketball, Wiffle ball, soccer, kickball and flag football, as well as additional floor games. Again, the activities will be age appropriate.

Slamma Jamma Basketball

Slamma Jamma offers full day and half day sessions for boys and girls, ages 5 to 15. The camp combines the teaching of the fundamentals of the game with games, contests, speakers, team competition, and individual and team skill drills. Opportunities to apply these basic skills to the game of basketball are expanded for the more experienced players. Shooting technique and drills are emphasized. The sessions are adjusted for the age, ability, and experience of the campers each week.

The camps are directed by Bob Ruderman, former head coach at Naugatuck Valley Community College and a member of the new England Basketball Hall of Fame, along with a staff of college and high school coaches and players, including Newtown's Joe DeVellis.

Lacrosse Clinics At NYA

NYA Sports & Fitness, 4 Primrose Street, will hold girls' and boys' lacrosse camps, as well as a stickwork and shooting clinic, this summer.

 

Boys' Camp

Session I, June 27-30, 9 am to noon.

Session II, August 15-18, 9 am to noon.

Grades 2-8.

Cost: $185 per player (includes reversible pinnie).

Run by Scott Bulkley, coach of the Newtown High School boys' team, and former University of North Carolina captain, who was the 2014 CIAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year.

Girls' Camp

Jul 11-14, 9 am to noon.

Grades 2-8

Cost: $185 per player (includes reversible pinnie).

Run by Maura Fletcher, former coach of NHS girls, and ten-time SWC champion, and Hofstra Standout Kristen Bulkley.

 

Stickwork & Shooting Clinic

Wednesday nights, June 15 through July 27 (seven sessions), 5 to 6:30 pm.

Grades 4-8 (girls and boys).

Cost: $99 per player for all seven sessions or $20 drop-in per clinic.

A $50 discount is offered for those who register participants in both camps, and a $35 discount is in place for players registered in one of the camps and the Stickwork & Shooting Clinic. Register online at the NYA webpage.

Tennis Instruction

Newtown Parks & Recreation is offering five weeks of summer youth tennis camps and clinics at Dickinson Park, 50 Elm Drive. Classes will be coached by very experienced USTA and USTPR certified coaches.

Classes will run the weeks of June 27, July 11, July 25, August 1, and August 15, and are held Monday through Thursday with Friday as the rain date. The camps are each week from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for Beginner/ Advanced Beginner, Low Intermediate/ Intermediate groups. The fee for the camp is $180 per week.

Murphy Basketball

The Murphy Basketball Camp's sessions at the Newtown Youth Academy, 4 Primrose Street, are as follows:

Session I: July 6-8 and 11-15, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Cost $340.

Session II: July 18-22, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Cost: $220.

Session III: July 25-29, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Cost: $220.00.

Camps are for girls and boys ages 8-15.
