Looking to enroll your child in a local camp this summer? Newtown Parks & Recreation has announced a number of brand-new programs for campers ages 2 through 15.
Futsal & Street Soccer
The objective of Futsal & Street Soccer is to increase players’ personal skills to the next level and motivate them in an environment that is conductive to learning.
Futsal & Street Soccer sessions meets daily from July 9 through July 13, in the Hawley Gym; as well as July 30 to August 3, on the Treadwell Turf Field. Classes are offered from 9 to 10 am, or from 9 to 3 pm for both sessions.
Camper ages 2 through 4 are eligible, and there is a fee of $240 for residents.
Project Adventure Camp
Students will participate in low and high ropes climbing, trust initiatives, group/cooperative activities, and belay activities at the brand-new High Ropes Course at Newtown High School. The camp is directed by Jeremy O’Connell, who is the Project Adventure instructor at Newtown High School.
Participants will need to wear athletic clothing, as well as sneakers. Campers should bring water and a snack.
Project Adventure Camp meets daily from Tuesday, June 26, to Friday, June 29, in the Newtown High School’s project adventure room, from 2 to 5 pm.
The camp is set for students entering fifth through ninth grade, and there is a fee of $225 for residents.
Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge
The program is specifically designed for both the novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. The camp week is filled with pure action as students enjoy one of the world’s fastest growing sports, drone obstacle racing.
Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge meets daily from Monday, June 18, to Friday, June 22, in the Newtown Middle School’s Gym A, from 9 am to 3 pm.
Children ages 8 through 10 are eligible to sign up, and there is a fee of $350 for residents.
Drone Racing & Obstacle Course Challenge
Campers will first learn about the basic safety of drone flying and the history behind drone racing as a sport in this action-packed program.
Drone Racing & Obstacle Course Challenge also meets daily from Monday, June 18, to Friday, June 22, in the Newtown Middle School’s Gym A, from 9 am to 3 pm.
This program is designed for campers ages 11 through 13, and there is a fee of $350 for residents.
Digital Art Plus
Create colorful, underwater scenes of sea turtles, sharks, seahorses, and other creatures of the deep using clay, paint, craft materials, and a variety of iPad art software with instructor Patricia Rieger.
Digital Art Plus meets daily from Monday, July 9, to Friday, July 13, in the Newtown Middle School, from 9 am to noon.
Campers ages 8 through 12 are eligible, and there is a fee of $185 for residents.
Track & Field Camp
Skyhawks Track and Field combines technical development, fundamental techniques, and safety with a major focus on fun. Using special equipment, boys and girls learn the fundamentals of body positioning, stride, proper stretching, and cool-down techniques for track and field.
The camp meets daily from Monday, July 9, to Friday, July 13, at the Newtown High School track, from 9 am to noon.
Campers ages 7 through 12 can sign up, and there is a fee of $125 for residents.
Ian Thoesen Softball Elite Camp
Under the guidance of Ian Thoesen and other professional softball coaches, each player will have the opportunity to develop the fundamental and advanced skills of the game, learn sportsmanship, socialize with their peers, develop leadership qualities, and actively participate as a valuable team member.
Ian Thoesen Softball Elite Camp has multiple sessions that meet daily, from June 25 to June 29; July 16 to July 20; July 30 to August 3; and August 20 to August 24. All sessions meet from 8:45 am to 12:30 pm at Liberty Field.
This program is designed for campers 6 through 13, and there is a session fee of $199 for residents.
Murphy Basketball Camp
Murphy Basketball Camp is an instructional basketball camp for boys and girls. Campers are separated into groups based on age and ability for small group instruction, daily games, and competitions. Camp staff will include Mike Murphy, Matt Murphy, and Jeremy O’Connell, along with area high school and college players.
The program has multiple sessions that meet daily from July 9 to July 13; July 16 to July 20; and July 23 to July 27. All sessions meet from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, at NYA Court 1.
Campers ages 9 to 15 are eligible, and there is a session fee of $225 for residents.
