St Rose School And NHS Students Share Projects At Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair

Local students attended the 69th Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair, held at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, in March. The fair was open for public viewing on March 16, and awards were announced on March 18.ctsciencefair.org

St Rose of Lima School seventh grade students Katerina Crow, Gregory Gargano, and Irena Komninakas participated after first competing in a school competition in February. St Rose science teacher John Dalton explained all seventh grade students finish a science project and participate in the school fair.

, at the state level Katerina earned an Office of Naval Research and US Navy/US Marine Corps certificate and a gift card from the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair for her project "The Investigation of Acidity on Zebra Mussel Shells (Driessena Polymorpha)."According to the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair's website,

Gregory was the finalist for the Pfizer Life Sciences Award. He earned a medallion, came in fifth place for the Alexion Biotechnology Awards, earned an Office of Navel Research and US Navy/US Marine Corps certificate and a gift card from the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair for his project "The Effect of Petroleum Products on the Growth of Ramshorn Snails (Planorbis Rebrum)."

Irena was a finalist for the Pepsico Physical Awards and she earned a medallion for her project "Bisphenol A Content in BPA-Free Water Bottles, Canned Food Items, Children's Plastic Connectable Beads, and Plastic Pen Caps."

Three Newtown High School seniors also took part in the state fair. Chloe Kasak entered her project "Leg Exoskeleton for Patient With Osteogenesis Imperfecta to Help Prevent Bone Fractures"; William LeMay entered his project "The Synthesis of Silica X-Aerogels Through The Sub-Critical Process"; and Kelsey O'Connor entered her project "Using Octadecanol to Limit Freshwater Evaporation in Areas of Droughts."

More than 650 students from 122 schools, both middle and high schools, entered 560 research projects in this year's state fair, according to the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair.
