Sophie Marie (Franc) Shail, 96, of Maplewood at Newtown died August 15. She was born to Mary and Albert Franc on the family farm in Stony Hill, Bethel, on October 27, 1920.

She married Joseph W. Shail, Sr, on June 29, 1946. Together they raised three children and enjoyed 37 years of marriage before his passing. She lived at their Coalpit Hill home for more than 70 years.

At the age of 81, Mrs Shail retired from Rogers Park Junior High School where she was the head cook for more than 30 years.

Two sons and their spouses, Joseph W., Jr, and Linda Shail and Raymond E. and Nancy Shail; son-in-law Clifton Kolwicz; nine grandchildren and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren; sister Anna Franc; brother Jacob Franc; and sister-in-law Rachael Franc survive her.

In addition to her husband, daughter Rita Ann Kolwicz; grandson Joseph W Shail III; four brothers, Stanley, Frank, Ambrose, and John Franc; sister Jadwega Chemilewski; and sister-in-law Hazel Franc predeceased her.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, August 17, at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Friday, August 18, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 46 Stone Street, Danbury, where Mrs Shail was a faithful communicant all her life. Burial will follow in St Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
