Flagpole Photographers Camera Club will open its April programming with a presentation on “Travel Photography” by local award-winning photographer and club member Rhonda Cullens. The club will also be hosting a competition meeting this month, with members taking on the challenge of "Flowers" in addition to their regular themes.

Newtown residents Jen Rogers and Hanna Roehrs returned home from New Haven last weekend with ribbons from the Handweavers’ Guild of Connecticut. The guild is presenting “Interlacements: Artistic Expressions in Weaving,” at River Street Gallery at Fairhaven Furniture, through May 5.

Members of Newtown Police Department plan to participate in the Special Olympics Penguin Plunge, a fundraising event for the Special Olympics of Connecticut scheduled for this coming weekend.

Connecticut-based not-for-profit organization Simply Smiles will host its annual Keep Hope Alive-Newtown event on April 26 at Edmond Town Hall. This year's honorees will be Ann and Michael Feinberg of Middlebury.

The fourth annual “Risk A Verse” poetry event will take place on Sunday, April 7. It will start at 2 pm and will again be presented at Newtown Meeting House. Admission is free, but donations will benefit Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

Deborah Levison, an award-winning journalist, author and daughter of Holocaust survivors, is scheduled to speak at Congregation Adath Israel on Sunday, April 28, at 2 pm. The Trumbull resident will speak about her true crime book "The Crate: A Story of War, A Murder, and Justice."

The 29th season of Saturday Pasta Dinners at Newtown United Methodist Church will continue next weekend. Dinner will be served Saturday, April 6, in the church’s fellowship hall, 92 Church Hill Road. A live performance of bluegrass, country, and folk music will follow.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is reporting that there are 11 years left to make significant progress on reducing carbon emissions around the world, or mankind will face catastrophic consequences. Newtown Environmental Action Team will host a presentation about climate change on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 pm, at C.H. Booth Library.
